Question about 2001 Ford Focus

My car recently died in the street, no dash lights, no horn, won't start and emits a high pitched tone when the key is turned on.

I posted a video. It's the same as the lights still on or keys in ignition when you open door, but it's a solid tone, rather than a ding.

It may sound strange but I was told ages ago that if the interior light fails on my particular model Ford (2005 BA) , it screws up the security system. Perhaps the bulb on yours does the same thing??

Unfortunately David. The security for your car is in the cluster. So your going to have to go back in and check yours and his work. Using but connectors on these wires is a no no. solder them. Add wire if you have to. Shrink wrap them. If the other guy pulled the board out, you need to pull it out also. Look very closely at it and make sure there are no cracks in it. If so follow the crack and repair any broken or not broken board leads(small copper lines across the break). Scrape the coating off the lead and solder a number 32 or 40 wire across the break. If it is not broke, it will be soon. Easier to follow the lead from one point to another and solder there. If you don't have the time to do this, then it will need another cluster. It will also need to be programmed at a dealership. One way to get around this is to go to the junk yard and find a compatible car. You have to pull the PCM, BCM, Cluster, ignition switch/lockset, and have the key for it. But it has to match your engine and transmission. When I do this, I grab the door lockset and the trunk lockset also.

Do you mean the instrument cluster? He didn't do anything to it but pull the bulb for the check engine light.

Can I just trade out the PATS?

  • Randy Ohler Apr 14, 2015

Well, some cars, I don't know which because I have never pulled the engine light out, won' work with out the bulb in. This sets the security. And I describe before how to get around Pats as you call it.

Is the battery dead? Have you tried to boost it?

Posted on Apr 12, 2015

Testimonial: "I'm a mechanic, myself, so yes, I've gone through all the normal checks. Gettin no communication from the pcm. Had a less than honest mechanic work on it, and he pulled the check engine bulb, and broke a bunch of other stuff that I've fixed. Haven't put in a new bulb, because my obdII was still reading it."

Only thing I can think of is fuse for no power to PCM. The horn and dash lights are another issue. Possible ignition switch? Try jigging key to see if dash lights start working?

Checked the fuses. Had ford dealership look at it too, they scratched their heads. I was already thinking ignition switch, but also, the radio has worked intermittently since we've had it. I've rebuilt the motor and trans, replaced most of. The electronics....still got me. And what is up with the continuos tone? It's got to indicate something specific...

2000 wrangler just died on me. The horn and lights work but no radio. Have no crank at all when trying to start

The horn and lights are not controlled by the key switch.
It sounds like the switch has failed or you have lost power to it from the battery.
Have you checked the fuses and the key switch with a meter ?

The security system does not disable the starter, it only disables fuel to the engine. In the fuse block under the hood, locate the STARTER relay. Place your hand on this relay and see if it clicks while someone else turns the key to start...if the relay is ok then the starter itself is faulty. Good luck, i hope this helps.

sounds like the alternator went bad. and wasnt charging battery, when headlights demanded power there wasnt enough to supply light and motor , so it shut down, recharge battery check battery connections then have alternater check, good luck. hope this helps.
