Usually a problem with the key switch, or a relay.

no car with A/T starts if it cant CRANK.
my stick car , push starts and gravity hill starts easy, too.
but not yours.
are head lamps dead, anything else dead, key on?
step 2 is (after key turn) is jumper cable starts.
ever do that, no, then call AAATOW>
or try to crank in NEtural as the operators guide tells how.
ok fuses good, we test them....

no cranks. 101 (i use a voltmeter and dont guess)
  1. battery just discharged or bad.
  2. battery lugs green with corrosion.
  3. battery cables all 4 ends loose, 1 or more.
  4. starter bad, if hotwire test fails now.
  5. starter ok hot wired, key line is dead.
  6. key line dead , PRNDL switch bad. or wire to it, (aka TRS )
  7. bad wires end to end, all this section,. key switch last.
if you read your cars starter schematic you can see all this.
its very simple system, unlike EFI.

Igniton starter switch, Sounds like either the wiring at the switch or the switch itself. They make a constant ignition contact in either run or start and it sounds like it isn't contacting in run.

2005 Pontiac Grand Am 3.4litre V6 sometimes starts hard after warm. It will go into excessive crank and seemingly a continued starter engagement when key is released. It has never failed to start?...

Hello Michael,

Typically PCM's are rather robust components that are not as prone to failure as sensors are. Some automotive electronic components can fail under heat stress and work fine after they have cooled down...like an ignition control module.

As you are experiencing your problem while engaging the ignition switch (which you described as sometimes hanging up) I would start your trouble shooting with the ignition switch itself.

  • Ignition starter switch directs current from the fuse panel to other systems in the vehicle
  • When not replaced, vehicle may experience no-start, intermittent shut down and/or current will not flow to all systems.
Your vehicle also has steering column lock actuator you will have to deal with when removing the ignition switch for replacement which is rated as "easy"

I have a 98 expedition that starts every time but shuts down everytime too.

When you start it up don't completely release the key from the crank position, let off just enough to stop the starter, if the engine continues to run the ignition switch is defective, a common problem in this year. This is not the lock cylinder but the electrical switch located down at the bottom top of the steering column that the ignition key cylinder actuates via a long steel rod.

Won't start..new batt. Starts to turn over then just kinda rumbles. Fuel pump shutoff switch is stuck in the down position.

Shut off switch should be down if it was up there would be no fuel to engine,Sounds like the starter needs to be checked, Or the wires to it need checked, clean and tight.

Our 2003 caravan just stopped starting,we have owned this van for 4 mon no problems, only 70000 mls, all of the sudden it won't start, changed out auto safety shut down relay switch, ignition switch still...

Check the starter selenoid, check for corrosion on batt, terminals and inside the cables, tap the starter with a metalic object and try to start the car, if it starts change the starter.

Yeah, sounds like your solenoid is staying closed rather than releasing after the car starts.
