Is it carburated? If not the throttle plate assembly may be dirty/gummed up affecting minimal air flow. Try cleaning the throttle plate assembly with carb cleaner. Another issue could be with a sticky IAC ( idle air control ) motor. You can also remove this and try to clean with carb spray. However, it may have to be replaced

88 f150 351w forever to start and when it does it runs real rough until I hold gas down for a minute then idle rough but will start right back up unless it sits awhile doesnt want to start back up

There are several possibilities for this problem. A "cold start" sequence is suppose to activate based on water temperature and the signal from the water temperature sensor. This makes the fuel rich and adjusts timing to make the engine run better when cold. It works like a choke only it is electronic.

There may be 2 sensors with one making the dash gauges work and the other doing the engine controls. If not 2, then 1 sensor would do the whole job.

Another possibility is an air leak in the fuel system which makes the system bleed dry overnight. It is far less common on gas engines but happens a lot on diesels.

Some earlier Ford engines from 1984 to I don't know when they stopped on trucks, would use a step-up solenoid on the accelerator bracket that worked off water temperature. Sometimes a bad water thermostat would make the temperature controls malfunction the other way (High idle, clicking, low idle) that would stall and engine as the temperature vary.

Ford f150 loss power

Anytime the check engine light comes on, you get the computer scanned for trouble codes to find out where to look.
When the warning light is on, the computer is either bypassing a sensor or is in limp mode to get you to a garage. So the mileage and power is going to be less than normal, sometimes alot less.
Remember, the trouble codes are only a guide, not a sure thing on what to replace. Components have to be tested before they are replaced.

88 ford f150 gear shift lock

A common cause when the gear is on the steering column is a worn out pin. That pin holds the lever to the shift assembly. Try removing the gear shift lever and examine it.
  • If the bushing between the pin and the shift is worn out, replace it.
  • Examine the tip of the the gearshift and replace the shift if it's worn out.
Hope I've helped. If not please feel free to contact me with more details.

Engine check light on,car starts well but cannot hold idling.can move around provided my foot is on the accelarator, otherwise engine cuts off

This sounds like an issue with idle speed control motor, faulty sensor....i suggest go to autozone and find out what codes the engine has, to be able to narrow it down !!

Ford f150 2003 - engine stalls during start-up, only stays on if gas pedal is pressed during start.

It sounds like it is getting too much fuel. Holding down the gas does the opposite of what you may think, it shuts the fuel flow off on fuel injected cars. You may have a leaking fuel injector or a bad fuel pressure regulator.

My 88 Celebrity engine

With the hood up and you standing to the side watching the engine have someone hold their foot on the brakes firmly and put the engine in gear. If the engine **** or slams into gear it more than likely the very top engine stabilizer mount. If so there is an red ignition running around the air compressor that sometimes starts to wear this wire into which can cause several problems among them the engine can stall at anytime, not start, but it can be a fire hazzard especially if there is fuel or oil present. Hope this helps.
