Roommate hooked battery up backwards on a 1988 nissan truck. sparks and smoke now just clicks but wont start.

At a minimum you probably blew a few major fuses - at worst you may have fried the ECM and/or other electronic component required to run the vehicle.

Room mate hooked battery cables backwards now wont start

ok you have to look for the main fuse its most likely a high number like a 100 amps or lower remove and replace it now sometime its bolt down so if you can not pull it right out its bolted ok

I have a 1990 Chevy Suburban. I hooked up the battery cables wrong and now it turns over but wont start.

Chances are, you either blew the IGNITION fuse, or the main FUSIBLE LINK under the hood (marked "fusible link").
Chances are you blew more than one fuse... let's hope you didn't fry the ECU!

Hooked battery up backwards

You need to take the Alternator in for a Bench check. The diodes are probably bad. Wiper switch or motor can be bad. Radio can be smoked.

For wiper motor, the contact points use a system where a derailer mechanically shifts the points to break contact. The contacts are probably fused.

I bought a new battery for my 94 celica and hooked it up backwards. Not realising it at the time, i tried starting it before I realised it was hooked up wrong. Now car wont start and brake/tail lights, and...

check the fusible links running from your positive wire. they are just what they sound like wires that act like fuses. if they are good then You probably blew the ecm or "computer".

I hooked my car battery up backwards on my 05 Toyota corolla and now it won't even try to turn over when i try to start it. The battery is not the problem.

  • When you hooked the battery up backwards you blew the 100Amp main fuse. You have two fuse boxes. One under the hood and one under the steering wheel. i recommend a look at the fuses in general. Which that 100 Amp fuse may bring some life back to the car there could be some more stuff to look at depending on how much (if) any damage was done.

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.
