Question about 1999 Ford Expedition
Had to replace a bad valve cover on my 1999 Ford Expedition 5.4 triton, when I started it about minute after heard a load noise as if metal on metal for about 10 seconds then it stopped let the car continue to run for about 10 min. to make sure cover was no longer leaking. Turned it of and tried to restart it and just got a clicking noise, assumed the starter had gone out. Next day uninstalled starter put a re manufactured starter on started just fine about 20 30 seconds after running same afull noise then it stopped turn car off tried to restart and could hear starter spinning but bendix not ingaging pulled new start return it parts store for new starter not re manufactured installed it started it same thing crazy noise after running for 30 seconds turn it off now back to the clicking in front and not even trying to start
Its your starter shims. Put shims in , what is happening is your starter gear is remaining engaged even after it starts thus it tears up the starter and the gear. It may take 2-3 shims. When you replaced your first starter did it have shims? I am willing to bet it did. Give it a try and i bet this fixes your problem. Good luck

Damaged flywheel, too much voltage blowing solonoids, starter not seated correctly could be missing a shim

Testimonial: "Thanks for info don't think its the fly wheel only because I think the starter is trying to re-engage after already started and running how do I know if it needs to be shimmed."
