Question about 1996 Honda Accord
The car is running hot when stopped at a redlight or left running in idle. If I turn the air on but leave it on heat it cools off. I've parked it in a specific area the see if it was leaking but haven't seen any signs on the ground but had to put water/antifreeze in it several times. I'm wondering what causes it to need water and run hot
Have you changed out the thermostat? hoses, done the regular car maintenance required on your vehicle? That is where I would start, if you have not done all that, you may end up with a bad head gasket.

If it isn't leaking externally, then it has to be internal, most likely a blown headgasket.

SOURCE: Have a 1989 Honda Accord
If you can keep the engine running with your foot on the gas at a stop it is likely to be the Idle control valve. Older Hondas' have 2 valves. fast idle control (which is prone to cause fast, or surging idle due to vacuum leakage) and the Idle control that takes over from the cold idle control once warmed up. They are located at the throttle butterfly assembly.

Check that your Radiator fan is operating. The reason that it heats up when stopped is that there is no air flow thru the radiator. When the car is moving there is air flowing thru the radiator (the car is basically cutting thru the air).

try checkin your idle air control. most of the time it is a vacuumn line going into intake.pull it off and if the car revs up dont worry, it wont hurt it. if it does simply put it back on, if it dies you have a bad vacumn.
