Is an alignment necessary after installing 2 shocks up front and 2 in the rear? Note: No struts on this vehicle.

I purchase 2 Gabriel 69604 Ultra Passenger Car Shocks for the rear. Also purchased 2 Gabriel 69600 shocks for the front. I heard an alignment is necessary when replacing struts but my car uses shocks all around. So should I get an alignment? This is from Gabriel.com- (Shocks and struts perform a similar function but vary greatly in their design. Struts are an integral part of a vehicle’s suspension system, providing structural support for the vehicle and, as such, are a safety subsystem. No need for a wheel alignement you didnot change the hight of the car

    Thanks Pierre but - I know that alignment is impacted by hitting pot holes or a curb, but do not understand how changing the height of a vehicle would thow it out of alignment? So by your answer struts would change the height of a vehicle causing the need for an alignment

    the toe in when you do and alig there camber .caster. and toein that you can ajust with the tie rod same thing when your stering is not center the guy ajust your toe in to put the stering center when you lift the car align change my i remember i use to alig a guy car it was a small but that guy was huge so everytime i align the car the guy use to stay in thr car so the align was off when he was not in his car but when he was driving everything was perfect wasnt chewing his tire out it was funny

I believe the front shocks are actually STRUTS you can replace the strutes your self with minimal effort. the vehical will then need to be aligned. my suggestion is to purchase the struts your self then talk to your local trusted shop that does alignments you can usually make a deal with them to have them install the struts for an extra 5 to 10 dollars other wise install your self then take it to the alignment shop

The Purpose or Function of a Cars Shocks and Struts

Shocks and struts serve the same purpose. They’re main function is to keep the vehicle from bouncing. A vehicle has front and rear springs to cushion the vehicle over rough road conditions. If there were no shocks or struts the vehicle would continue to bounce excessively. The shocks and struts prevent the car from bouncing by damping the springs.

What’s the Difference Between Shocks and Struts?

Shocks are usually used to dampen leaf springs, where as a strut is used to dampen coil springs. Shocks are usually a single cylinder in the open where as a strut is normally surrounded by the coil spring and are more massive and complicated.

That’s why struts normally cost a lot more to replace than a shock. On a car the front suspension usually has struts and the rear usually has shocks. Some trucks have shocks on the front and rear. Other than those distinctions, shocks and struts serve exactly the same purpose.

Why Should the Cars Shocks or Struts be replaced?

Keeping in mind that the purpose of shocks and struts is to keep the vehicle from bouncing, the following is some of the reasons why they should be replaced.

* An excessively bouncing car can be an uncomfortable driving experience.
* The vehicle can be harder to control leading to an unsafe condition.
* Excessive strain can be put on other vehicle components causing premature failure.
* Bad shocks or struts will cause the tires to bounce and create spotty or choppy wear on the vehicles tires.

How to Tell if a Cars Shocks or Struts are Bad

1. Shocks and struts can be oil or air filled. If they are leaking oil or air they need to be replaced. Consumer beware, some dishonest auto repair shops will squirt oil on the shocks, show the customer the leaky shocks and tell them they need to be replaced.
2. Another method is the bounce test. Put all your weight on the front or rear of the vehicle and push down on the vehicle. Let go of the vehicle and stand back to see of it bounces. If the vehicle comes back up without bouncing, the shocks are probably in good shape. If the vehicle bounces a few times, chances are the shocks or struts need to be replaced.

Shocks and struts are wear items, not maintenance items. There’s no set mileage or time limit when they should be replaced. If the tires seem to have a choppy wear pattern or the vehicle bounces excessively over bumps, the shocks need to be checked.

Look at the struts or shocks and see if they’re leaking. Perform the bounce test and see if the vehicle bounces. Replacing the vehicle shocks and struts when they’re bad will create a safer and more comfortable driving experience, not to mention saving money in the long run.

They are stand alone shocks

The piece that holds up the front passenger wheel (i believe its called a strut), is bent or broken, would u happen to kno how much that would approx. cost? its a 2002 chrysler sebring

The strut must be compressed for mounting. Labor is approximately 2 hours. Not sure what labor costs in your area or if your shop will allow you to bring strut or require you to buy from them.

Your car has struts. The strut cartridges are about $80.00/ea and require some special tools. You have to take the whole assembly out of the vehicle and then using a special set of tools, compress the spring that is attached to the strut. Once the front struts have been replaced an alignment is needed. depending on labor rates in your area, figure about 2 hrs. for the strut change and then what ever an alignment costs. I think about $400.00 is in the ballpark.

The struts model (MacPherson Strut),are both in front and back of this car.

Of course this is only the cartridge, you have to transfer the spring, and the top mount of the existing strut. You need a pair of coil spring compressor to do the job. The basic procedure to replace a strut is:
Remove the top nuts that secure the strut assembly to the frame mount inside the engine compartment. Do not remove the center nut.
Mark the lower strut mounting location on the hub for installation reference. The alignment will be close if the new strut is installed in the same position.
Remove the bolts that hold the strut assembly to the hub.
Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle.
Mark the top mount for installation reference. Using a side mounted spring compressor, compress the spring and remove the top nut and retaining washer. Pull strut assembly out from the bottom of spring.
Slide the new strut assembly up into the spring and reposition the top mount onto the spring in the same position that it was removed. Install the retaining washer and top nut.
Tighten the top nut to the manufacturer's specifications and carefully remove the spring compressor.
Place the strut assembly back into the vehicle.

REMOVE**** FRONT SHOCKS, FIRST OF ALL.SUPPORT THE LOWER CONTROL ARM WITH A JACK,REMOVE FRONT WHEEL, REMOVE BRAKE HOSE AND ABS SENSOR HARNESS TO THE STRUT BOLTS OR CLIPS,REMOVE ACTUATOR FROM TOP OF THE STRUT,IF EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC ADJUSTING SUSPENSION. Replacing front struts


Okay....here is the steps first....and then the directions on how to use the tools:

  1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the front wheel.
  3. Detach the shock absorber lower mount by removing the two bolts.
  4. Remove the retainer nut, retainer, cushion and shock absorber.
  5. Detach the cushion retainer from the shock absorber.
  6. Compress the coil spring with a commercially available spring compressor.
  7. Detach the stabilizer bar.
  8. Support the upper suspension arm and steering knuckle securely.
  9. Remove the cotter pin.
  10. Loosen and remove the nut.
  11. Using a ball joint removal tool, detach the lower ball joint from the lower control arm.
  12. Loosen the suspension arm set bolt.
  13. Remove the suspension arm set bolt nut.
  14. Remove the nut from the strut bar front set bolt.
  15. Pull out both set bolts.
  16. Remove the lower suspension arm and coil spring. To install:
  17. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note the following torque specifications:
    1. Strut bar front set bolt: 221 ft. lbs. (300 Nm)
    2. Lower suspension arm set bolt: 148 ft. lbs. (200 Nm)
    3. Lower ball joint nut: 80 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
    4. Lug nuts: 83 ft. lbs. (110 Nm).
