Alot of vehicles have what is called an interlock or reverse park switch usely on the side of the transmission tells the computer what gear or mode trany is in electrical signal
It moves everytime you move the lever so it is a ware part on automatics .
You didn't say what vehicle or transmission you have but it sounds like this switch,I've seen it before

TRANSMISSION

Fuse # 20 or 21 gets power through ignition. This fuse controls PRNDL indicator, speedometer, tach, & will cause transmission to not shift gears correctly. Ours took off in 3rd gear when put in Overdrive & only ran in 3rd gear. If we tried to manually shift thru gears (auto trans), it had 1st, 3rd, reverse. No 2nd or over drive. Replaced ignition. Fixed problem. Root problem was Electric motor that engaged 4 wheel low side was bad. Every time we used 4 Low side it threw power surge through ignition & blew ignition out. Good Luck.

Car only starts in reverse and only drives in neutral

Sounds like a cable to the transmission is not adjusted up right, and/or the neutral safety switch is not adjusted right, if this applies to your Toyota Corolla.

I have a 1995 Lincoln Continental that shifts itself into neutral driving down the street. I have to put the gear shifter into neutral and then back to drive to get the transmission to catch. It has been...

if trans not slipping and shift o.k true out its shift range
i would look at adjustiing the selector swich if electric
or lever control if linkaged if electric a new selector swtch may be required
if linkaged parts in linkaged may start to wear (bushings etc)
also look at engine and motor mounts if system is linkaged

What does it mean when my transmission clunks or is hard to get into when I put it into reverse? It is a manual transmission.

The clutch may need to be adjusted or replaced, as it sounds like it is not completely releasing. That can also cause the "Clunk" as everything tightens up when trying to find a gear. Although, the clunk is most likely caused by a worn U-Joint. Try to adjust the clutch first.

Put vehicle in gear and it won't go...no drive or reverse.

There is a known driveability issues with 2004 Ford Freestars related to the PCM and the Transmission. A Service Bulletin was issued in july of 2006 covering an issue where water was entering the PCM causing a complete loss of reverse in the transmission as well as harsh or delayed shifts. Sometimes it is possible to get the vehicle moving in this condition by using the lowest gear.

In any case the fix is to remove the PCM and install weather stripping to route water around the PCM edges. The PCM will need to be dried out overnight. You can use a hair dryer on low heat settting, just be very careful.

Ford fiesta 2003 reverse gear sound...

if you are only having the issue in reverse that would make me lean more towards the transmission having an issue than the clutch.

Car will not chnage from park position when put in reverse, drive

I think there is a cable for this that goes to the transmission. Problems with them are broken cable, or loose cable clamp especially on the transmission end. It is also possible that the end attached to the transmission detent got unattached, or the end to the shifter did. Rick

Can't shift it into gear.

all pacificas are auto and have a slap stick this might be due to have the spring that attacthes to the transmission it could be that the shifter might have to be replaced or adjusted or your transmission might be shot.
