I would suspect a canister purge control; valve causing vacuum to the evap canister all the time. You may have to replace the evap canister if it is saturated with fuel. This will also result in the check engine light coming on with oxygen sensor codes for the engine running too rich

P0455 Mitsubishi Description
This diagnosis detects leaks in the Evaporative Emission System (EVAP) purge line using engine intake manifold vacuum. If pressure does not increase, the Engine Control Module (ECM) will check for leaks in the line between the fuel tank and EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve under the following vacuum test condition.
The vacuum cut valve bypass valve is opened to clear the line between the fuel tank and the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve. The EVAP canister vent control valve will then be closed to shut the EVAP purge line off. The EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve is opened to depressurize the EVAP purge line using intake manifold vacuum. After this depressurization is implemented, the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve will be closed.

if tightening the cap or replacing the cap does not help take your car to a shop to have it diagnosed as it requires special tools/equipment to test this and get an accurate results to find what needs replacing.

The code is for a large leak in the EVAP system such as a loose or missing gas cap. But it could also mean a loose or missing hose to the canister or other leak in the tank.
The computer vents the tank several times an hour while the engine is running, and it checks the system by pressurizing the gas tank. If the tank will not hold pressure the code is set.
You may have to check the top of the tank where the fuel pump gasket is, as well as the vent lines to the front of the car.
A mechanic would perform a smoke test to look for leaks.

The P1440 code is for a small EVAP leak. Your gas cap being loose is a common EVAP problem. If not that, the EVAP canister is also well known for developing small cracks.

You are on the right track, you replaced the vent valve and replaced the vsv valve in the engine compartment that should of solved the problem as long as the correct valves were replaced, i would check for a leak in a hose for the evap system, a smoke test would be a good way, the canister may not be the problem but the valves on the canister, there are a few vsv valves on the canister and also the pressure sensor, the switching valve is very common also, there are so many valves thats why the dealer replacing the canister as an asm, hope this helps also make sure gas cap is good.

EVAP System Vent Circuit Malfunction

This diagnosis detects leaks in the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) purge line using of vapor pressure in the fuel tank. The EVAP canister vent control valve is closed to shut the EVAP purge line. The vacuum cut valve bypass valve will then be opened to clear the line between the fuel tank and the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve. The EVAP control system pressure sensor can now monitor the pressure inside the fuel tank. I CAN'T PUT GAS IN MY 2003 LANCER


Your evap charcoal canister is full from being overfilled. The biggest problem with "topping off" is that it can wreck the evap system.
This system collects gasoline fumes from the tank and routes them to the engine for combustion.
Overfilling could force raw gas to enter the system and prevent it from working right. It could also cause a condition where you have a hard time filling the tank, as the system can't properly relieve pressure from the tank and the gas pump's automatic shutoff keeps engaging.

You will need to replace the canister for the fix.
