LOL at Nation's answer!

You have a fuel injection system.

Use an obd2 scanner and check for any trouble codes from you car's computer....

It can be a sticking fuel injector, or something with the evap system

SOURCE: 2006 volkswagen beetle convertible rear passenger

On the inside trim, you can remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge.

VW Beetle Intermittent Failure to Start . Acts Like it's Not Getting Proper Fuel Delivery.

Hi, it sounds like its flooded or the fuel pump and pressure regulator are not holding enough pressure while stopped. This puts air in the system causing a very hard hot start. Think the fuel pump, fuel filter and pressure regulator need to be replaced at this point.

Try your other key. Sometimes after the alarm has been set off the computer no longer recognizes that key. Its part of the security system. It will crank buy not start. To use that key again it will have to be reset with something from the dealer or you can completely unhook your positive on your battery. Getting help from dealer is easier...believe me!
