It's odd...I drove it around town because the light was off,the battery was charging right..made a stop at the mother in laws place.light came on right after we left.drove strait home.but tonight it starts fine.battery light is not on.not going anywhere though.makes me nervous the charging will act up,and I don't want to risk an accident ,let alone, at night, knowing how it acts up.

  • Dana Oakes Sr. Apr 14, 2015

What about a wire going to the pcm near the pdc behind the battery or the pcm on the passengers fender wall?I pushed inward on the wires lightly and the battery light wasn't on last I shut it off.

If the battery is draining while the engine is running, I would suspect the alternator is not working properly.

Thanks, even though I had it tested,I am considering changing the alternator.it is either running good and charging perfect,or it flips over and the battery light comes on and the battery drains if you run the engine while it's on.I I am hoping I won't have to replace pcm.

    paulmacintyre Apr 11, 2015

Can't see it being a PCM issue. I have installed many alternators out of the box and have had issues with them. I would suspect a poopy alternator. Hope this helps

  • Dana Oakes Sr. Apr 11, 2015

The voltage regulator is not in the alternator,it's in the pcm.that's New to me and has made it a little trickier, but because the battery discharges when i run the van with the battery light on,and because it came on when I hit a good bump in the road,I figure...a short somewhere.does that seem right?

    paulmacintyre Apr 11, 2015

You will have to check the plug on the back of the alternator to seee if the PCM is actually turning it on. The plug needs to have 5-12 volts on at least one wire with the key on. Some manufactures use 5v some use 12v. Use a volt meter to test the plug to see if you have at least 5v on at least one wirei If no voltage present on any wires then that is the problem Possibly a fuse. If there is voltage ona t least one wire I woiuld suspect an alternator

  • Dana Oakes Sr. Apr 12, 2015

Thanks Paul,I am going to check the voltage today on the alternator,I didn't know before it the 2000 model has a feature,it will not run if you take the battery terminal off while it is running.it will automatically shut down. That's what AutoZone says.and that's what happens.I wish it wasn't designed that way, cause it makes things a little more difficult to the do it yourselfers.I really appreciate all the advice, when I do know for sure what the issue is,I will definitely post it.maybe it will help someone in the near future...

I have never heard of a vehicle shutting down when the battery disconnected as long as the alternator is working. It is not a good practice to disconnect the battery while running due to the electronics, however, it should still stay running

  • Dana Oakes Sr. Apr 12, 2015

I know it's a wire or connection.it's also on the drivers side.I wiggled these wires before and the light went out and it charged fine.I did the same thing today.I just need to figure out the actual bad wire.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).

The alternator has semiconductor diodes to change the AC it generates into DC for charging and operation of the electrical system.
These diodes can fail 'a little' meaning that their reverse resistance falls below its normal level, which is very high and will only allow a few microamps to flow, a level of discharge lower than that your other electronics such as clock and digital odometer functions draw and insignificant to the battery's health.
If you have a multimeter with a 10 Amp range, something very common even on the cheapest digitals via a separate unfused jack, you can remove your negative battery clamp, insert the meter (set for that separate range), black lead on the clamp, red on the battery terminal, and measure current draw with the engine off.
Note: Fasten one lead firmly and the other, tap only until you can see whether the drain is greater than 10 Amps. If is much greater, it will destroy the meter bbut briefly connecting shouldn't hurt it.
These meters can be had in auto parts stores, Radio Shack (in the US) or other electronic suppliers. If in the US, you might check for Harbor Freight tool stores in your area; I have bought several of these handy meters for $3 US there.

SOURCE: my 2000 chrysler cirrus will start and run but battery won't stay charged

You have a short, or something that is not turned off that is draining your battery.Did you install something "electrical" lately?
FYI before you replace a battery. Get the car started, disconnent the battery and if it dies, You need a alternator.

Even with a fully charged battery i need to use a battery pack to start the van when it does start the cooling van comes on for a minute then goes off and that continues

Check rear AC in van and turn it off. Most vans have dual AC. Even if the front AC is off, the rear is still usually on and some vehicles have the cooling fan and condenser fan run together to help with cooling. Check relay and fuse also.

Avoid a dead battery

If your battery is discharging while the van is parked up, there's 3 general causes:
  • The battery itself is failing and cannot hold a charge. replacement is the only option.
  • There is a fault within the alternator - either the alternator is not charging or it is allowing the battery to drain because the diodes (the rectifier in the alternator) have failed.
  • There's a parasitic drain of power somewhere. Something is remaining 'live' when the van is parked up - and draining the battery.
Many places will do a free battery check.

If your alternator is'nt charging, this will run the battery down, at the same time cause your car to die...This would be one cause....

97 checvy astro 4.3 6cyl. I replaced battery, Starter and the batt wont hold a charge. Is it possible to check the wiring from the alt to the starter without having to remove the alternator?

Yes, If you have a volt meter, jump and start engine, with engine running you should have approx 13.5 to 14.2volts that would tell me that batt is getting charged when engine is running. you said new batt would not hold a charge, I would be thinking about a parasitic draw(small amount of power) that in time will drain batt. things to look for are glove box lights, under hood lights that dont turn off. one easy way too see if you have a draw is to disconnect one batt cable, now use a regular (12volt non-self powered) test light and touch one end to batt cable and the other to empty batt terminal, with no light switches on and doors closed, this test light should not light and if it does then you have a drain on batt that will kill it say overnight.

2000 Dodge Ram cargo van trouble starting and once started will not keep running tried jumping battery and no change what should we try next?

Sounds like the alternator is bad (not charging). If your battery is good/charged it should run until the battery is drained. If the battery is bad/not charged the car will die as soon as the cables are taken off as there is not enough juice to run the ignition system. If the alternator is good (but battery bad) the car would still run as the alternator makes power to run the car but becasue the battery is dead/drained there is no power to start the car (hense needing the jump). Have the alternator/charging system tested

Battery

if a battery is left to sit in your car there is always a constant small power drain and a short drive very seldom will not maintain a proper charge so it does need to be run more often

Battery light came on then lights went out and van died minivan

your alternator most likely went bad and you were just driving on battery power with out the alternator recharging back the battery when your voltage drops to around 7.5 volts then the van will die please dont try to drive home with out fixing alternator.
