You may have an idle air control motor issue ( IAC).This motor controls the idle on start up as well as normal driving conditions. Is the check engine light on. If it is it may give a hint as to what the problem is.The traction control light has no control as far as the idle is concerned,. It is controlled by the ABS system. Usually the ABS light will come on if there is a traction control issue.

I figured the idle issue was the iac but the check engine light does not come on when the Trac light comes on and makes the car almost die...would the iac make it try to die when going down the road?

No, as long as the gas pedal is pressed the vehicle should accell the vehicle. Yhe IAC only comes intom effect during start up mand idle. I would have the vehicle proffessionaly scanned for trouble codes and operating data parameters to properly diagonose this issue.

That's what I thought I will take it the advanced and have them out it on a only does it every once in a while so my concern is that it will not show a problem if it's not acting up...

2001 grand am died while driving wont start back trac off light came on along with engine light

The trac light probably came on because the engine light came on.
You would need to get the computer scanned for trouble codes, and find out if you are missing spark to the plugs or fuel to the injectors to proceed with testing.

2001 grand am se jerking when changin gears trac off light on

Final drive speed sensor causing Trac light and rough shifting. Metal dust on the sensor. Have the transmission filter and fluid serviced. This should have been done at 60,000 miles. You may get an ABS light too. Service the sensor. Perform an OBDII scan for stored faults.

Sounds like you have a bad wheel speed sensor. You need to have it scanned. Since it's been sitting, it might just be a bad connection to one of the speed sensors.

I have this same problem and had it checked. It is the wheel sensor. Mine is the passenger front right wheel sensor. According to the mechanic I take it to the GrandAm's are known for this. The part is about $40.

Error lights.

Have the systems scanned for trouble codes with a scan tool. The ABS and Trac lights are on because there are fault codes stored.Access the fault codes, and they give you a direction that needs repaired. You likely have a wheel speed sensor damaged or just not working.Repair the speed sensor, clear the codes, all systems go.
