SOURCE: turn signal does not work
I found a wire pulled loose in the connector at the turn signal switch on the steering column.I believe it was blue and yellow,not too hard to get the covers off .2001 sport trac

remove the trim panel at the very rear of trunk, remove it and place it out of the way, remove tail light Assembly retaining nuts top and bottom, I think there are 6 per side, pull the tail light assembly straight back to access the bulbs for replacement.

You should be able to access the defective bulb/lamp from within your trunk. Open your trunk and carefully, pull back the black cloth. Once exposed, you should see a wire harness. Follow it to the bulbs/lamps. Twist the defective bulb and it will come out.
