Find the trouble code & reset / clear it

if it does come back with the same code, then you'll have to either rollup your sleeves and get that bad part replaced and / or trace the wiring to whatever solenoid or sensor that failed

until you do so, your vehicle will protect the transmission by not going past that set speed limit

SOURCE: removal of transmission

You suspend the engine from the top (with the proper tool). Remove the front sub-frame. Remove the axles, cooling lines, electrical plugs and cables. Unbolt the transmission from the engine and lower it out of the car from the bottom using a transmission jack.

Where is the neutral safety switch on a 1997 mercury sable?

It is part of/incorporated into the transmission range selector switch. The switch is under the hood on the transmission where the shift cable connects to the shift post. See picture

That code is: Fuel Pump Primary Circuit Malfunction. Could it be the wires are not on tight or one is shorted? Check wiring very carefully.

Okay this is a internal problem in the transmission you will need to remove side cover and oil pan of the transmission. This is a big job to do it safely you will need a hoist and engine cradel this a profesional job my advice to you unless you have done this before 2 or 3 times take it in for service this is a delicate job mistakes can resault in costly mancanical further repairs.Hope this helps,John

99 Sable - hesitation or flutter at 35-42mph - service light on

I had the same EXACT problem on my 2002 Sable. Freaked out thinking I needed a transmission.
All I needed was a tune-up. When not firing properly, sensors "take over" to compensate.

Check plugs/wires...you'll be surprised...I sure was!!

1996 MERCURY SABLE 65,000 MILES ON SPEEDO. TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SLIP ALSO RUST UNDER VEHICLE. LINCOLN MERCURY STATED REPAIR WOULD COST 4 TO 5 THOUSAND DOLLARS AND YOU MIGHT AS WELL JUNK THE VEHICLE

Transmission problems are an issue with Sables. If you Google transmission and Mercury Sable you will come to quite a few complaints. There are actually a few posts on this website where folks are having issue too. Personally a cheap o-ring in my 1999 Sable went out resulting in a $1800 transmission repair bill. I literally gave the car away about three years ago. In almost 20 years of owning vehicles the two years I had the Sable was the most expensive and busiest in the way of repairs.
