Shift solenoid is gittn hot from wear. To much resistenc. Has to cool down. Chec fluid level and cooling first. If no remedy, then replace solenoid

It could be the linkage from the shifting lever to the tranns. This linkage isn't very expensive to have replaced and your shop can tell you if it is indeed the linkage or not.

Assuming this is an automatic transmission, odds are you have lost a band in your transmission, this will require a rebuild, you may also notice it will fail to shift into high gear as well?
