Why won't my caravan idle?

My 2005 Caravan just had the timing belt replaced and now it is hard to start, I give it some gas at start up and it runs smooth as soon as I let it idle it wants to stall. I adjusted the idle speed up now it will idle, why is that.

I am sorry I was unable to help you... have you checked the camshaft synchronizer and camshaft sensor? The most common misfire problem from the Gen I caravan series vehicles was the infamous slipping flywheel. They used a three piece flywheel; an outer ring with the cogs, a middle section, and the inner axis portion. The outer portion was spot welded and wasn't subject to much torque force, but the inner portion that was TIG welded on four small places and filed down smooth was. They often sheared off causing the inner portion to spin 1/8 of a rotation until they caught again... this was a permanent misfire condition that can only be fixed by replacing the flywheel part or transmission.

You could have a problem with the transmission. I would run a error report and see what the car computer says because that can be a big indicator that something is wrong. Then you can really find out if there are any problems going on that you are unaware of. http://www.knollautomotive.com

TPS - throttle position sensor failure. Do yourself a big favor and buy a Haynes Manual for the caravan/voyager/town & country and then buy a cheap fault code reader. An Aktion is about $100. Look up any fault codes in the Emission chapter in the manual. You may also have a vacuum leak... look at the vacuum diagram under the hood and trace every line carefully and examine the hoses that go from the air filter box to the mass flow sensor manifold. (It all plastic and rubber and tends to crack with age allowing unmetered air to enter your engine making the mixture lean... this is why you have to add more fuel to it to get it to burn properly.) Your EGR valve may also have a fault causing that symptom.

Is it possible for you to send me the photos for you timing marks coz I am sure you intake cam timing is out, maybe you might need to take off the rocker cover to adjust the timing correctly as you check the cam lobes

Fuel is metered to the injectors on a signal from the coolant temperature sensor. When the sensor fails the engine will be slow to start the first time and there is a strong odor of gasoline. Turn it off and it will start right up. There will normally be no code. Idle is sometimes affected.

2005 caravan stalls when at stoping

Check the compression, all cylinders should be about 125 lbs, If some are off you may have bent some valves when the timing belt broke, the pistons
will hit the valves & bend them, If so, it is best to replace the head
I did this before no fun.
Good luck.

I have a 99 Caravan 3.8l that won't start. It will turn but doesn't start. I've changed plugs, wires, crank shaft positioning sensor, coil pack, and tcm still won't start. Now I'm told...

I had a caravan that would not start as well double check and make sure you have a spark at the plugs. I replaced everything I could think of as well and it turned out that the timing belt was broken if there is spark at the plug than you know you have a good timing belt I know this does not answer your question about the pcm serial numbers but I wanted to give you another thing to check before getting into the sensors.

Running problems

Idle air control valve or a vacuum leak, the idle air control valve controls the amount of air let into your engine when you start or while running you holding your foot on the gas lets more air in.
