Question about 1997 Dodge Dakota

1 Answer

Overheating exaust system 1997 dodge dakota has caused exhaust pipe failure 3 times in past 60 days. Mechanic said unburnt fuel is burning inside pipe and causing failure. True?

Any comments on why I would get failure of the exhaust system right after the manifold and prior to the catalytic converter? 3 times in 60 days. Two new pipes with overheated and then failed and holes blown out.

I suspect that it is over fuelling and the cat converter is blocking the exhaust
check ignition timing as it is probably too far retarded which causes later spark in relation to the valve timing position where the exhaust valve is opening allowing burning fuel into the exhaust manifold,

heating exhaust pipes is either too lean or incorrect timing allowing unburnt fuel to burn in the exhaust pipes . Check valve clearance for the exhaust valves.

Changed catyletic converter new one glows red what could be problem?

Glowing red catalytic converter means your car is injecting too much gas, more than the spark plugs can burn up efficiently in the cylinders, or you have a serious misfire, so multiple cylinders are sending unburnt fuel into the exhaust system, where it will ignite inside the catalytic converter due to high heat. find the cause of excessive amount of unburnt fuel getting into the exhaust system. don't run it like that too much or it will ruin your new cat. quickly if it is glowing red... incorrect timing of engine, severe engine misfire, possible causes.

Dodge dakota engine code p0420 is on whats the problem

Hello
There is not cut and dry answer for this code, here is a list of the possible reasons in order of how common they are.
Definition:
P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (in plain English this means the Catalytic Converter is likely worn out and not cleaning up the exhaust stream) A note about aftermarket Cats, they often don't measure up to the system parameters and trigger the same code again.
Here is the whole list of possibilities:
Possible causes - Three way catalyst converter Bank 1 most cars only have one catalyst monitor, it located after the main cat converter in the exhaust pipe, it looks like an O2 sensor but performs a different function.
- Exhaust pipe leaks up stream of the cat.
- Intake manifold vacuum leaks
- Fuel injectors may be faulty (to rich)
- Fuel injector leaks
- Spark plugs may be faulty
- Improper ignition timing
- Engine Control Module (ECM) (very unlikely)

Gas consumption is very high 26mpg. I have replaced the 3 oxygen sensors on the exhaust pipe. What could be the cause.

if it were unburnt fuel, your cat would have gone as well, so it strikes me its just the o2 sensor overheating causing the failure(s).

I have a 1997 V-6 dodge dakota sport it has 1k on

Hi! The fuel filter may be clogged by dirt and rust causing failure of fuel supply to the engine. Try replacing the fuel filter and it may resolve the problem. Hope this helps and have a good one!

I have a 1992 dodge dakota and awhile back i blew the engine. well we rebuilt it having it plained down and everything...then one day i was driving it and it just died and wont start. Its getting gas and...

when you say it has gas are you sure fuel is being injected by the injectors?
if not sure get whats called a noid light, sold at all large auto parts chain stores.they are inexspensive.plug it in to an injector connector and have someone crank engine if it blinks then injector signal ok. the light will give a dim blink which is ok.
no blink check for a blown fuse/loose connector/short to ground from engine to computer.
other causes of no start would be;
timing chain slipped
plugged exaust [melted down cat converter]
low fuel pressure
a major sensor failure,map sensor/throttle position sensor/crank,cam sensor
pcm [computer] failure or wireing to it
ignition switch
low compression
