Have you had the brakes checked or replaced lately ? There is a warning indicator on the brake pads an when the pads wear down this warning indicator makes contact on the brake rotor an makes a screeching noise ! You should have them checked !

Ford focus fault finding

I don't know what a "early" sound is, but there are several problems that can cause a screech: the commonest is a slipping power-steering belt combined with a stiffness in the steering rack. The cheapest is probably a stone caught between the brake pads and disc. So first check your tyre pressures, then check your brakes finally, take it to a garage to have the power-steering looked at.

Hey Mike - I'm the 2001 Outback wagon owner... you said you think a belt went - would that cause such an array of problems? burning brakes smell, battery light on, steering limited, screeching brakes...

If one of the pulley or alternator seized up (would cause belt screeching and smell) finally let go(pop sound) then none of the accessory drives working (no belt).

Really bad screeching sound coming from drive belts

Make sure the belts are tight. When you press firmly on the belt in the center of the pulleys it shouldn't flex more than 1/4".

1999 Beetle screeching sound in 1st gear

could be the brake disc rusty/sticking pads.this is not a fault ... brake discs go slightly rust in 7 seconds so if left say for several hours in a damp area you may get this "problem".could also be brake dust..need to know when it occurs/how often.....

1993 nissan altima what could be causing a screeching

It probably is a belt. You should look under the hood and check for a loose belt. Tighten as necessary. You should not be able to deflect the belt more than 1/2" in the center of the span of the belt.

Brakes will also make a screeching noise when they are worn out. This noise will also go away when you stop (of course). The sound is quite different than the belt sound.

Screeching noise coming from driver side tire

The high pitch sound may come from the brake pads as metal parts hit the disc to signal the owner that it needs change. The metal parts gets exposed when the pads have worn out. The brake also has a hub to cover the disc. See if the metal plate is hitting it but this issue would appear when the wheels are in motion. Check if it is the belts, have the tension checked out. Other than that the bearings are the other items on your wheel that could cause a high pitched sound when you car is in motion.

You have have too tight or too loose of belts, check the tension of the belts. You want to be able to have about 1/2 inch give on the belt
