The park lock solenoid and the starter are not really connected to each other. If you can not shift out of park by turning the key on and pressing on the brake, you should be able to shift out of park by turning the key to the unlock position but not to the on position.

How do I start a 1997 Mercury Sable that doesn't make any sound when I turn the key? Just a clicking noise on the passenger dashboard side.

i cant move this post to mercury where it belongs so.....
so will pretend its a Mercury JEEP, OMG, and Obamanation.LOL
ill answer for you. (works on all cars, the era and automatic trans)

as poster said its NO CRANK , symptoms.
you are barking up the wrong tree, doing simple tests solves this easy. if the car only cranks in Neutral the park/neutral switch IS BAD (need more proof?, sure a voltmeter does just that)

! if you hot wired the starter solenoid, the car cranks, perfectly
so is not that, nor battery , just in 5min tests. that.
(hot wired the solenoid small wire !)

so the KEY line is dead, lets focus on KEY LINE.
starts and key and ends at starter solenoid tiny wire.
and in between (love to fail) are THINGs.
remember we can see your old car. not see hacks, and such.
i can spot hacks in 1/10th of second, can you>?

  1. bad park-neutral switch, or PRNDL, bad.
  2. bad relay, for same,
  3. bad wires, connectors end to end this key line,
  4. bad starter switch if fails park and neutral (easy huh)
  5. hacks, here, alarms, remote start bs, and endless possibles.

a $10 volt meter solves every failure here, easy, ask.

now ILL access the online FSM to see if there are surprises.
3 engines, and not stated in your post nor VIN,,so i can figure it.
3.0 L, no RELAY
3.0L and 3.4L SHO engine. both HAVE THIS RELAY !

see the PRNDL switch on the right, of dwg.?
on the non SHO, it connects to solenoid directly.
so see that 12v i marked on right , ?

must be about 11vdc minimum cranking, at all points
on the right, in park or neutral.
if one mode fails the switch for THAT mode is bad.
fails is like 0v, 1v, 8v
the rule of solenoids is 8v is the fail point. 8v is chatter point.
seen in alaska mostly.
the relay be better guess than $200 starter/battery.

1997 Buick Park Ave won't start

Assuming the engine is in sound running condition, if the engine is not turning over at all when you hit the starter then the problem is with the starter motor or the starter motor solenoid. That is assuming there is no problem with the power supply to the starter motor unit such as a failed starter motor relay or a wiring issue.

Why is my jeep not starting, no turn over but clicking

automatic transmission? mine a stick. and different.
ok.
does it crank in neutral as the operators guide states?
not just park, neutral has fresher contacts, try them.
clean battery lugs first.

here is the list of tests, (not guessing !)
  1. fuses all good,
  2. battery charged? does jumper cables work now?
  3. if jumper cables cranks engine then battery is bad or only discharged (for other reasons, ask)
  4. if jumper fail, the starter or key line is dead.
  5. we hot wire the starter next. if it cranks now starter is good.
  6. if the hot wire fails, starter is bad(battery charged )
  7. i the starter hot wires ok that key line is dead.
  8. i then check the P/N park neutral switch next (ask)
  9. or further up the line to the ign. switch.
  10. (or use a scan tool) the newer cars can report more errors. not looking , here, you can miss the boat.

Click on the link.
I tried to get everything on one page, makes it a little small to read. Check for voltage and ground at the starter motor. Any testing make sure tranny is in park or neutral and parking brake is set. Two voltage circuits, one comes from the battery, hot all the time. The other voltage circuit goes hot with key in the crank position and the starter relay energized, goes to starter S terminal. The neutral or clutch switch is also involved in that circuit. Use a test light to check for voltage. The starter motor is grounded through engine block. Make sure battery has a full charge. When you check fuses, also, use a test light and check voltage on fuse circuit, applicable fuses.

Does not start

no cranks all end in no start.
low battery
bad battery cable corrosion at 4 ends.
bad starter.
dead battery can be bad charge system. or left lights on,.
hot wire the starter solenoid and see if it cranks now.
yes, then the park lock out is failing to send key start to starter
no?, then starter is bad, if hot wire fails.

91 camary wont start

did you try jumping the solenoid at the starter to see if it turns?.
could be the neutral safety switch has failed or the ignition switch is bad.
1991 camrys did not come with engine immobilizers unless you have an after market alarm.

Is there a starter fuse on a 86 buick park ave

May be a starter fuse - but if blown, starter will not rotate engine. More likely a fuel starvation problem. Replace fuel filter in gas line - first choice. Next, have fuel pump pressure checked. If it has failed, you will get 4 -5 seconds of engine run before stopping.

The engine will not turn over, the battery is good and transmission is in park

Try it also in Neutral.(could be Transmission Range Sensor failing only in Park) Check the starter relay. Check the fuse to the starter relay. Possible starter motor. Possible ignition switch.
