Idle will drop to 0 and increase while engine bucks stalls half the time when driving at moderate to high speed. when starting out 1-3 gears it shifts slightly rough with some hesitation.

Sounds like you need a tuneup. If you can't do it yourself take it to a competent mechanic certified in your vehicle brand and model.

It starts but as soon as it's put into gear acts like it wants to go but quits.


Could be a few things. But here are the obvious. Check for a vacuum leak around the intake. When you put the car into drive it starts putting strain on the engine, a vacuum leak will give it too much oxygen and cause a fuel mixture issue / reading.
If nothing wrong there, you may have a bad throttle position sensor. When you put the car into drive and it starts putting strain on the engine it will pull the idle down then the sensor will adjust it automatically. Hope this helps.

  • Poor starting: The engine may start and then stall immediately.The engine may be encouraged to keep running by slowly pressing the accelerator pedal: pressing too quickly may again stall the engine.
  • Erratic/fast idling: The idle may be so erratic as to have some impact on the automatic gear shift characteristics and may actually prevent gear shifts. The engine idle speed may be increased above normal if the TPS fails to report that the throttle is closed. After the engine has been run at high speed the engine may take longer than is usual to return to idle as the ECU will not be able determine how quickly to shorten the injector cycles.
  • Engine hesitancy/ jump in revs: Engine may fail to respond quickly to the accelerator pedal input or may suddenly jump in revs inappropriate to pedal movement. When working properly the TPS should instantaneously signal the rapidly opened throttle position to the ECU. The speed of this signal is much quicker than any similar signal sent from Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) sensor or MAF/IATequivalent. The ECU responds by increasing the fuel injection volumes to match the rapid increase in air volume. If the TPS fails to send the correct signals, the engine will seem to "hesitate" as the throttle is applied as the ECU looks to the other (slower) sensors to determine engine status. A sudden blip of the accelerator at idle can stall the engine (see above - poor start) as the ECU reacts too slowly to increase the injection time to match the sudden intake of air.
  • Engine Misfire: Spurious, beyond normal range, signals from the TPS causes the ECU to set inappropriate fuel injection cycles resulting in misfire.Detected misfire leads to a check engine light(CEL); mal-function indicator lamp (MIL). Cylinders with misfire events detected by the knock sensor may be shut down (disable specific injectors) by the ECU to prevent engine damage.

Note: - With the TPS disconnected the ECU depends on the slower signals it receives from the Mass Air Sensor (MAS) and/or the Manifold Air Pressure (MAP) sensor along with feedback from the oxygen sensor to help regulate engine speed and fuel injection cycle.

How to check? The socket for electrical connection with the TPS has 3 pins, one for 'ground', one for 5 volts 'reference' and a third (generally the middle one) for 'signal' output. Back probe the signal pin in the connector to the TPS. Attach the positive lead of a voltmeter to the probe and measure the voltage output as the throttle plate is rotated. If working correctly the meter should show a voltage consistent with the throttle position from approximately 1 volt when closed and 5 volts when fully open. What is looked for is smooth voltage increase with throttle change.If there are drop outs in the throttle transition voltage signal or if there is no transition then the TPS is faulty.

How to fix? If the track is dirty causing drop outs, try cleaning it with residue-free electrical cleaningspray. If the track is worn it is perhaps easiest toreplace the complete device. In some instances it may be possible to adjust the location of the central mount of the TPS contact arm along the throttle shaft by a few millimeters and in the process cause a fresh concentric region of track to be used

I got 1994 toyota andf it stall when i turn on anything like blinkers or headlight and when i put it in gear. Its a five speeed v-6 but it starts right up and idles but if i hit brake it sounds likeit


ok , i guess you are saying the engine stalls when I use heavy electrical loads (like head lamps or brakes or even blinkers)
and when you shift from park to drive.
ok , if the engine RPM is 800 before the stall, then that is a total loss
of engine power with lost of idle controls.

The big load is in DRIVE on automatics huge going to DRIVE.

if battery voltage (yes, a 10 buck walfart meter works) can see 13.3 to 15vdc idling at 800 or more RPm.
the Alternator does not work below 800 so , dont expect it to.

so, if rpm in park is below 800 then we fix that first, see why?
if idle drops below 800 this is caused buy many things.
one vital fact missing is you didnt say, if I drive it like a stole it.
that is aggressive right foot. , do you have full engine power, now?
ignoring stalls. (see my drift there, "is engine power good;?)

battery volts above 13.3vdc.
idle at 800 and stalls in DRIVE (shifted)
  • low fuel pressure.
  • never ever tuned up this decade, with all spark parts bad.
  • ISC stuck( idle speed controller (it lets in more air , in DRIVE)
  • low engine compression.
  • other complex ,fueling issues, (ask) and lots of tests. (ask)
if no tachmeter in car or tool box, repairs get dicey.
hard,
it takes tools to diagnose and fix cars.
go tools? or willing to buy them

Engine revs is too high when in neutral gear


First thing check for engine control module fault codes, if you have a lean running code then you have a vacuum leak on the engine, this allows air to bypass the idle speed control system and raises the idle up. Another issue is a sticking Idle speed control air bypass valve, but that is not common and vacuum leaks are.

You have a mechanical bind. Disconnect the main linkage and work it all by hand. Everything should be free and slopy. Aerosol carb cleaner will help, but only when the engine is not running.

My dodge dakota it idles below 1000 rpms and it sounds like its about to stall. and if i rev it up and then let off it will stall instantly. when i am driving from first gear to second it goes up to 4000...


It is actually hard to say without actually seeing the vehicle, but the target speed for your engine idle is around 750 RPM. The stalling after revving kind of depends on how high you are revving it and whether the engine is at operating temperature or not. This may be normal. Then again, it could be that the Idle Air Control (IAC) is not working properly.

The shifting from first to second at 4000 RPM sounds like a completely separate problem. This could be due to low transmission fluid level, sticking shift control solenoids, or possibly even a malfunctioning Vehicle Speed Sensor.

If the Check Engine light is on, have that checked first.

locate the mass air flow sensor. it's located inline with the air intake. it should be right after the air filter. disconnect the plug and see if the car runs better. also, when tapping on it lightly on the sensor with a screwdiver handle and the engine skips, could also indicate a bad sensor. these sensors will not always set the check engine light. suspecting the fuel system is also a possibility

I have a 1999 jeep cherokee that has intermitant transmission problems 1)shifting up it wind out to 2k-3k before shifting 2) at higher speed it feels as if it slips out of overdrive rpm increase but speed...


It will shift out of overdrive upon increasing throttle , pulling hills and so on. Your overdrive probably kicks in around 35 to 45mph and kicks back out as you increase throttle. Electrically controled speed sensor to control the response. Overwise the engine would bog down to a stall. Over drive is just that. It changes the gearing ratio to over drive meaning less then final gear 4 to 1 down to 4 to 3 etc more direct drive ratio to lessen consumtion of fuel with less stress on engine. Have shift speed sensor adjusted. Don't drive in overdrive in city if most driving is under 45mph
