Please explain on a 96 cavalier 2.2 it say to torque heads 90 degress?

You are referring to the cylinder head bolt-torque sequence. Here is the instructions, then I'll clarify.

  1. Install cylinder head bolts finger-tight. New cylinder head bolts are recommended.
  2. Tighten bolts in sequence, tighten the long bolts to 46 ft. lbs. (63 Nm) plus 90 degrees. Tighten the short bolts to 43 ft. lbs. (58 Nm) plus 90 degrees.

The cylinder head is made of aluminum. Over-torque of bolts can result in warping or cracking of the head. Also, some of the head bolts go into the water jacket. Those bolts requires a teflon sealer or water will come up through the threads and result in coolant leaks. Use a thin wood dowel to probe the cylinder head bolt holes to see if they bottom out or go into the water jacket.

When you tighten the bolts, do it in the sequence directed, up to the toque specified for each length bolt. Once that has been done, you will make one more circuit of the bolts, tightening each one by 90 degrees. The easy way to do this is to place your torque wrench on a bolt with the handle pointed at 6 o'clock. Tighten the bolt another 90 degrees, or when the handle reaches 9 o'clock. 90 degrees is 1/4 revolution of the bolt. (You can start the wrench anywhere that is convenient to make the 90 degree advance without interruption.)

Hope that helps!

What is the head bolt specs for a 94 saturn sohc

Hello jakeslonewo,

I just did one of these today and the procedure is as follows.

If you are using new head bolts (Recommended) install the head and toque the bolts to 48 ft.lps.follow the torque sequence in the picture below . Then remove the bolts and and coat the threads lightly with motor oil. This is to ensure that the proper clamping load is achieved.

The next three steps are:

1. In the sequence shown below torque the head bolts to 22 ft.lps..
2. In the sequence shown below torque the head bolts to 37 ft.lps..
3. !n the sequence shown below turn each bolt an additional 90 degrees.

What are the lower intake manifold bolt torque sequence on a 98 oldsmobile intruige

When torqueing bolts on manifolds or heads you always start in the middle or center and torque in a circle motion and olny torque 1 bolt at a time. Start with a low toque and increase torque up 5 to 10ft lbs / or newtons each time until torque spec is reached.
