It measures oxygen content (differentially) and if all fuel is burned fully ,oxy goes to near 0% as does HC.
this ecu is brick dumbb. and can not really give good diagnostic information, until 1996 (usa)
bad sensor? sure,
wires fell off , it, burned off (humm 2000degrees here) and connections rusty?
exhuast leaks near it, making it slam lean for ever. (causing huge rich running and horrid MPG $$$$)
the old cars, did that last comment worse than you can imagine.

many ECU can report O2 sensors, with bad heaters, and sensor stuck high or sensor stuck low,
on this old ECU(relic) it (13) means just STUCK.
as all cars this old that can be , nothing at all related to 02 sensor.
like running max lean, or fully rich all the time,
ill give 2 simple examples.
1: fuel pressure at 60psi bad FPR
2: fuel pressure at 20, FPR stuck open.
3: leaking injectors
4: misfiring, will send a ton of oxygen to the exhaust.
got other symptoms? driving? etc?

you gave year and 1.0L 3cyl facts, very rare here, those facts.
make sure there are no other DTC codes, watch the light blink at least 4 cycles.!

here is fsm words on stuck and test conditions.
Test Conditions: ECT>= 158? , RPM >= 2100., not in throttle fuel cut mode, and charging eff. >= 38% (Alternator or battery not bad)

stuck means it reads 0v all the time
or near 1v all the time.
why?, only remains.

why, ? the 02 is bad, or the wire to the 02 (cell+) is shorted to ground, or there are exhuast leaks near the 02, causing it to slam to 0v. (common as nails this)

there are other causes ! (gross misfire. sends a slug of oxygen down stream, and can do this) . If a new 02 dont fix it, its NOT simple.

the sensor is dead, or wires bad to it. or can be other causes. (complex)

The sensor measures the amount of air and fuel that is left over and unburned in the exhaust. If there is too much fuel it will set a code. If too much air it will set a code. The average life expantancy of this sensor id around 50 000 miles. It could be very welll worn out if the engine is running ok and not giving you any idling problems

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the cooling system.

CAUTION When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4. Loosen but do not remove the four coolant pump pulley bolts.
  5. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  6. Remove the lower splash shield.
  7. Remove the air conditioner compressor drive belt.
  8. Remove the lower alternator cover plate bolts, loosen the alternator adjusting bolt, and remove the drive belt.
  9. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  10. Remove the coolant pump pulley.
  11. Remove the timing belt.
  12. Remove the oil level dipstick and guide tube.
  13. Remove the alternator adjusting bracket from the water pump.
  14. Remove the water pump rubber seals.
  15. Remove the water pump mounting bolts and nuts. Remove the water pump from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Clean the gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
  2. Check the water pump by hand for smooth operation. If the pump does not operate smoothly or is noisy, replace it.
  3. Install the pump using a new gasket. Tighten bolts to 115 inch lbs. (13 Nm).

  5. Install the upper alternator adjusting bracket and tighten bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
  6. Install the oil level dipstick and guide tube.
  7. Install the timing belt.
  8. Install the water pump pulley and leave the bolts hand tight.
  9. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  10. Install the water pump/alternator drive belt.
  11. Install the lower alternator cover plate and tighten bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  12. Install the air conditioner compressor drive belt by releasing the tensioner pulley and installing belt.
  13. Install the lower splash shield and lower vehicle.
  14. Tighten water pump pulley mounting bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  15. Adjust the water pump drive belt tension and tighten alternator adjustment bolt to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).

Where can I find a free pdf manual for a 1996 Geo Metro?

which manual, operators or FSM. (my guess FSM)
the OEM factory service manual. (toss coin)
free , now that is a tall order!
you do know, that in 1996, there was no such thing, right>?
and that someone would have to take a week to scan it right?

you have these options, on all Geo's. made (or swift)
  1. buy one on ebay,
  2. log in to alldata.com DIY for 15 bucks.
  3. google all week finding the All week scan man books, LOL
  4. join a real geo form and beg there , but they will scan maybe 1 page for you, on topic, see links below.

How to get flash code from ecm

ECM not TCM, got you.
the car has a connector called a DLC
data link conn.
the codes are DTCs (modern jargon) diag, trouble codes.

you jumper 2 pins, like all cars of this era. (most)
covered in the FSM book by suzuki or Geo (GM)
or at any of the 3 forums here.
http://www.fixkick.com/swift.html

the service jumper
first ill show the schematic.
http://metroxfi.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/6e2-a-4.png
find that connector under hood
then jumper the ppl-yell purplewithyellowstripe.
to ground
and the CEL blinks out the streams of codes. if there.

wow the whole car.

if you use google
you will see lots of photos of the connector

If you are going to do a timing belt job you should get a book. Along with timing you will need to torque specs. Most parts stores sell manuals for $20. If you dont want to buy a book try autozone.com

My 93 geo is having trouble idling at drive but as soon as you put it back in park or neutral power is back on again. If stopped at a stop light I have to put it in Neutral to keep running or it gets...

check the TP Sensor. might need adjusted or replaced. Also could be the Catalytic converter. theres actually 2 on the exhaust and me living in Ohio we dont have emissions so im gonna hack both of um off and just run a str8 pipe from the header back. theres an extra fuse spot i believe its on the left side of the fuse panel. its raised up a lil higher then all the other fuses in it. throw a fuse in it and turn the key on the check engine light will blink a code or multiple codes. i.e. 2 flashes small pause 2 flashes is code 22 wich is the TPS. 2 flashes small pause 1 flash can also be the TPS 1 is low voltage the other is high voltage. but u can pull the whole list of codes from google type in 93 Geo Metro Trouble Codes Hope this helps

As long as they are the same type of engine ( I believe they should both be 1.0L 3 cyl engines). Most parts for the Geo Metro from 1992 to 1994 interchange with out a problem.
