There is a switch unit on the transmission that reads the position of the shifter. This fault can be from damaged wiring or a poor connection in the plug from years or corrosion and dirt. Locate the plug and disconnect it. Use electrical contact cleaner or coca cola to clean the pins on both ends of the connection. Reconnect it and clear the fault. Then cycle the shifter from park to 1st and back at least 3 times. If the fault returns replace the unit. https://www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CB4QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.subaruforester.org%2Fvbulletin%2Fattachments%2Ff88%2F37217d1337467837-failure-start-diagnosis-help-inhibitor-switch.pdf&ei=yw0oVa7WDYWlsAWD0IIY&usg=AFQjCNGB80w-7SFTqVhTssWan9-FJaAG5Q&sig2=Fshz5kP1DIT8T4W-n4j1fA&bvm=bv.90491159,d.b2w

Where is the neutral safety switch on a2004 chevy Malibu, 3.5 L engine

The transmission range (TR) switch is part of the park/neutral position (PNP) and back-up lamp switch assembly (1), which is externally mounted on the transmission manual shaft. The TR switch contains four internal switches that indicate the transmission gear range selector lever position. The PCM supplies ignition voltage to each switch circuit. By grounding one or more of the switch circuits, the PCM detects the selected gear range by the state change of the switch input. Refer to Transmission Range Switch Logic . Switch input to the PCM is represented on the scan tool as HI and LOW. HI indicates an ignition voltage signal. LOW indicates a zero voltage signal. The four parameters represent transmission range switch signal A,B,C and Parity.

2000 cadillac deville neutral saftey switch location and how to replace

Hi Andre , I'm guessing your Caddy won't start because of your wanting to replace the neutral safety switch .Before replacing or trying to,did check for B+ voltage coming through the switch to the PCM ? There are a lot thing's that could cause your caddy not to start !
Moving the ignition switch to the CRANK position sends a 12 V signal to the PCM ignition crank request input. The PCM verifies that it has received a valid theft password from the vehicle's theft deterrent module and that the transmission is in the PARK or NEUTRAL position. The PCM then grounds the control circuit of the START 1 relay. When the START 1 relay is energized it completes the B+ voltage circuit to the starter solenoid S terminal.
There could be a anti-theft system problem , is the security light lit on the instrument cluster ? Check the start 1 relay in the under hood fuse box . Did you test for Power an control at the relay ? Find the relay an pull it out of the fuse box , look on the bottom of it . You should see four set's of numbers 30,87 an 85,86 , 87 should B+ voltage ,30 goes to the starter solenoid .If you jumped those two the engine should crank over . If the starter is good an battery cables are good etc... I'm talking about jumping where the relay plugs into , not on the relay . Pin 86 should have B+ voltage with the key on , pin 85 goes to the PCM . PCM gives a ground to pin 85 energizing the relay sending B+ voltage to the starter .
Do you know where the PCM is located ?
Transaxle Range Switch Parity Input
connector 1 blue pin 41 ,white wire

Yes you need to test first because what you call neutral safety switch is really called
Transmission Internal Mode Switch
The transmission internal mode switch (IMS) is a sliding contact switch attached to the lower control valve body, within the transmission. The manual valve link assembly then connects the IMS to the manual valve. The four inputs to the PCM from the IMS indicate which position is selected by the transmission selector lever. This information is used for engine controls as well as determining the transmission shift patterns. The input voltage level at the PCM is high (ignition voltage) when the IMS is open and low when the switch is closed to ground. The state of each input is available for display on the scan tool. The four input parameters represented are Mode A , Mode B, Mode C and Mode P (Parity).
If the PCM detects an IMS transitional state between NEUTRAL and D4 while the vehicle is in motion, then DTC P1823 sets. DTC P1823 is a type B DTC.

Where is the safety switch for a 2006 chevy malibu

Safety switch ? For what ? Park neutral safety switch ,is this what you mean ? Your vehicle not starting ? There is a lot more involved then just that switch.
Circuit Description
For ignition switch power modes refer to Body Control System Description and Operation. Once the ignition is placed in the Run/Crank position, the control circuit of the Run/Crank relay is grounded by the body control module (BCM). With the Run/Crank relay switch closed, battery positive voltage flows through it and on to the park/neutral position (PNP) switch. With the PNP switch in either the Park or Neutral position, battery positive voltage will flow to the starter relay coil supply voltage input terminal of the powertrain control module and the coil side of the starter relay. Placing the ignition in the START position sends a message to the engine control module (ECM)/powertrain control module (PCM) requesting engine start. If the ECM/PCM has determined that the transmission is in Park or Neutral and theft is not active, it will ground the control circuit of the starter relay. Battery positive voltage will then flow through the switch side of the starter relay to the S terminal of the starter solenoid, cranking the engine. For remote vehicle start (RVS) information, refer to Keyless Entry System Description and Operation.

P0116 - ECT Circuit Malfunction
OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Circuit Range/Performance Problem
What does that mean?

The ECT (Engine coolant temperature) sensor is a thermistor which changes resistance based on temperature of the coolant in contact with it. The ECT sensor will be located in the block or coolant passage. Usually it is a two wire sensor. One wire is a 5 Volt supply from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) to the ECT. The other is a ground to the ECT.

As the temperature of the coolant changes the resistance on the signal wire changes accordingly. The PCM monitors the reading and determines coolant temperature in order to perform essential engine fuel management. When engine coolant is low, sensor resistance is high. The PCM will see a high signal voltage (low temperature). When coolant is warm, the sensor's resistance is low and the PCM will see a high temperature. The PCM expects to see slow resistance changes on the ECT signal circuit. If it sees a quick change in voltage that isn't consistent with an engine warming up, this P0116 code will set. Or if it sees a lack of change in ECT signal, this code may set.

Symptoms

There may be no noticeable symptoms if the problem is very intermittent, however the following may occur:

MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illumination
Poor drivability
Black smoke at tailpipe
Poor fuel economy
May not idle
May exhibit stalling or misfires

Causes

Potential causes of the P0116 code include:

Missing or stuck-open thermostat
Bad ECT sensor
Short or open on signal wire
Short or open on ground wire
Poor connections in wiring

Possible Solutions

If there are any other ECT sensor codes, diagnose them first.

Using a scan tool, check the ECT reading. On a cold engine, it should match the IAT reading or should be equal to ambient (outside) temperature reading. If it does match the IAT or ambient temp, check the freeze frame data on your scan tool (if equipped). The saved data should tell you what the ECT reading was when the fault occurred.

a) If the saved info indicates that the engine coolant reading was at the coldest exreme (around -30 deg. F) then that's a good indication the ECT resistance was intermittently high (unless you live in Anchorage!) Check for an open in the ECT sensor ground and signal circuits and repair as necessary. If they appear okay, warm the engine up while monitoring the ECT for any intermittent jumps high or low. If there are replace the ECT.

b) If the saved info indicates that the engine coolant reading was at the warmest exreme (around 250+ deg.F) then that's a good indication the ECT resistance was intermittently low. Check for a short to ground on the signal circuit and repair as necessary. If it appears okay, warm the engine up while monitoring the ECT for any intermittent jumps high or low. If there are replace the ECT.

P0037 Transmission Control System Malfunction
OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description

HO2S Heater Control Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
What does that mean?

Heated Oxygen sensors (HO2S) are inputs used by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) to determine oxygen content in the exhaust system. Bank 1, sensor 2 refers to the second sensor back on bank 1. The PCM uses the information gained from the Bank 1,2 HO2S mainly to monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converter. Integral to this sensor is a heater element

The PCM controls this heater to warm up the sensor to operating temperature. This allows the engine to enter closed loop faster and reduces emissions on cold startup. The PCM continuously monitors the heater circuits for abnormal voltages or in some cases, even amperages. Depending on the make of vehicle, the Oxygen sensor heater is controlled one of two ways. One way is that the PCM directly controls the voltage feed to the heater either directly or via a HO2S relay and a ground is supplied from the vehicle's common ground. The other way would be a fused 12 volt Battery feed (B+) that feeds 12 volts to the heater element anytime the ignition is on and the control of the heater is done by a driver in the PCM which controls the ground side of the heater circuit.

Finding out which one you have is important because the PCM activates the heater under various circumstances. If the PCM detects an abnormally low voltage condition on the heater circuit, P0037 may set.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0037 DTC may include:

Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illumination
There will likely be no other symptoms

Causes

Potential causes of a P0037 trouble code may include:

Bank 1,2 oxygen sensor heater element has failed
Physical damage to heated oxygen sensor has occurred
Control circuit (or voltage feed, depending on system) is shorted to ground
PCM Oxygen sensor heater driver has failed

Possible Solutions

Do a visual inspection of the Bank 1,2 HO2S and wiring harness. If there is any damage to the sensor or any damage to the wiring, repair/replace as needed. Make sure wiring is routed away from exhaust. If all appears okay, unplug the Bank 1,2 HO2S and verify that there is 12 volts B+ present with the key on engine off, (or ground is present, depending on the system).

Verify the heater control (ground) circuit is intact. If so, remove the o2 sensor and inspect for damage. If you have access to resistance specifications you can use a Ohmmeter to perform a resistance test of the heater element. Infinite resistance indicates an open in the heater. Replace the o2 sensor as necessary.

I have a 01 ford taurus whit p0705 transmission code and i have no idea what this mean

Code P0705 - Transmisson Range Sensor Circuit (PRNDL Input)
The transmission range switch detects the selector lever position and sends a signal to the TCM.

The park/neutral position (PNP) switch includes a transmission range switch. The transmission range switch detects the selector lever position when the shift lever is in the N or P shift position and sends a signal to the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)

Possible causes
- Open or short park/neutral position switch circuit
- Poor park/neutral position switch circuit connection
- Misadjusted park/neutral position switch
- Park/neutral position switch may be faulty

Keep us updated (remember to rate thsi answer).

4wd does not work

Electronic Shift On the Fly (ESOF) Operation
The ESOF system is an electronic shift 4x4 system that allows the operator to choose between two different 4x4 modes as well as 2-wheel drive. The operator can switch between 2WD and 4WD HIGH mode at speed. To engage or disengage LOW Range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 kph, the brake depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL.

The transfer case is equipped with an electromagnetic clutch which is located inside the case. This clutch is used to spin up the front drive-line when shifting from 2WD to 4x4 High mode at speed. When the control switch on the instrument panel is turned, the generic electronic module (GEM) recognizes that a shift has been requested and activates the electromagnetic clutch and the relays which power the transfer case shift motor. When the shift motor reaches the desired position as determined by the contact plate position inputs to the GEM, power to the shift relays and motors will be removed. When the transfer case front and rear output shafts are synchronized, the spring loaded lockup collar mechanically engages the main-shaft hub to the drive sprocket. Finally, the front axle collar is engaged and the electromagnetic clutch is deactivated.

Shift Between 2WD and 4x4 HIGH:
Shifts between 2WD and 4x4 HIGH can be made at speed. Listed below are the inputs and outputs needed by the GEM to execute a change between any of these modes.

Feature Inputs:
*4WD Mode Switch (Various resistances).
*Contact Plate Position Inputs A, B, C, D (grounded when closed, open circuit when open).

Feature Outputs:
*4x4 Shift Motor Relay Outputs
*Transfer Case Clutch Relay (grounded when relay is on, open circuit when relay is off).
*4x2/4x4 Vacuum Solenoid (grounded when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
*Cluster Indicators (ground when activated, open circuit when deactivated).

Shifting Into/Out of 4WD LOW:
When shifting into or out of 4WD LOW, the GEM requires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 kph, the brake is applied, and the transmission is in NEUTRAL.

Feature Inputs:
*4WD Mode Switch (Various resistances).
*Contact Plate Position Inputs A, B, C, D (grounded when closed, open circuit when open).
*VSS Sensor (Sinusoid Signal: 0.7V-20V, 2.2 Hz/mph).
Brake Input (battery voltage when brake is depress, open circuit when not activated).
*Transmission Range Sensor (grounded when transmission is in NEUTRAL, open circuit otherwise).
8Start/Clutch Depressed Input

Feature Outputs:
*4x4 Shift Motor Relay Outputs
*4x2/4x4 Vacuum Solenoid (grounded when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
*Cluster Indicators (grounded when activated, open circuit when deactivated).

4WD Mode Switch
A rotary switch allows the vehicle operator to choose between 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW modes of 4x4 operation.

GEM Module
The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) controls the operation of the 4x4 system

Vehicle Speed Sensor
The vehicle speed sensor (VSS), mounted in the rear of the transfer case, informs the GEM of the vehicle speed.

Transfer Case Shift Motor Sense Plates

The shift motor sense plate, an integral part of the electric shift motor, informs the GEM to the positions of the transfer case

Transmission Range Sensor
Located on the left side of the transmission, this sensor informs the GEM when the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position.

Electric Shift Motor
The electric shift motor, mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case, drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case to select between the 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW positions.

4x4/4x2 Vacuum Solenoids
These two solenoids are attached to the upper RH side of the engine compartment dash, and alternately route vacuum to the vacuum motor which engages/disengages the center axle disconnect collar in the front axle assembly.

4x4 Shift Motor Relay
A module containing two relays which under the control of the GEM, shift the transfer case shift motor between the 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW modes.

Transfer Case Clutch Relay
An electromechanical relay is used to activate the transfer case clutch within the transfer case.

Good luck and hope this helps, but start with the simple and check the fuses and wire harness. Both white/light blue stripe wires should have 12V in run. The GEM will ground the left side (closest to engine) solenoid to disengage the front axle. It will ground the the right side solenoid (closest to fender) to engage the front axle. If the GEM doesn't see Neutral it will not let the truck come out of 4Lo. If the GEM had water leaking on it it may well be the root of the problem. The shift motor only has power when the GEM sends it a signal to move the shift lever. Once the shift is completed the motor shuts off. There are 2 wires that control the shift motor. A yellow and an orange. The GEM alternates between 12v and Ground to these wires to control which way the motor turns. The GEM uses the transfer case shift relay module to control the power to the motor. There are contact plates inside the shift motor assembly that indicate the position that the shift lever is in. This is what the GEM used to know what the T-case is doing. Any one of these components can fail.
