1. Fuel (ethanol) clogging
2. Sensor (crankshaft or camshaft) mis-communication...bad sensor or signal to computer
3. Electrical harness (age cracking, corrosion)
4. Fuel filter clogged, not sending proper fuel pressure
5. Fuel pressure too low (fuel pump)

Not necessarily in order...but start with fuel, move to electrical inspection, then sensor...unless you have a CEL code to start with first.

SOURCE: most common cause for code P0340 of 95 Ranger

Hi, the cam shaft sensor will be located Under the hood, center, upper engine area, mounted behind rear of intake manifold, in the engine block.

This is a magnetic or hall effect sensor. It sends a signal to the computer relaying information about shaft speed, position and acceleration or deceleration. This information determines when the fuel/air mixture needs to be ignited and how much mixture is needed for the engine.

The possible causes of failure will be faulty housing or faulty wires as well. A faulty ECM could trigger a false alarm as well. this is highly unlikely but, possible in most cases. The most reported reasons is flat out sensor failure.

SOURCE: how to fix mis firing of engine that cause

Sounds like it could be your Idle Air Control valve (IAC). The IAC does as it sounds and controls the idle in your vehicle. When these go bad, you can either clean them with a throttle body cleaner or replace them. Most people replace them as they are normally not very expensive and relatively easy to replace. The IAC is located on the throttle body which is where the air duct hose ends as it comes out of the air filter box. It is normally held on with a couple screws and just needs to be unplugged and plug the new one in. Please, please let me know if you have any further questions. If you can't find the location of the part let me know. Also if you don't think the IAC is your problem and have addition information that could point to something else, let me know. Here is a picture of what you are looking for: 656346b.jpg
This is the IAC for the 6 cylinder engine but it is different and more expensive on the 4. Let me know if you have the 4 and need a picture of it. Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

SOURCE: 1998 ford ranger, number 3 cylinder mis fires.

When you change the plug what color is the tip of the old one? This could be the answer to your problems. It should be a light beige or tan if everything is working properly.Just take one of the old plugs down to your local garage and get the mechanic to have a look at it. He'll be able to tell you why it keeps misfiring. Hope this helps.

Po306 new intake gaskets smoke test compression test leak down test new plugs wires tested injectors swapped injectors checked ijjector wiring with noid still when you pull off no 6 wire it changes nothing...

Code 306 means cylinder 6 is not producing power. And as you know it takes fuel, spark, and compression at the right time to make power.
Generally, if the injector is firing at the right time the spark plug should be firing as well.
Are you sure the plug is firing ? And is it possible injector 6 has no fuel to spray ?

I have a 99while ford ranger that was running fine units it started missing really bad. It cranks up but I notice that only one of the two coil packs were firing. I got a new coil and put it on, still no...

Its not the computer. Mis-fires can be many different causes from, Injectors that are clogged, to bad wires, to a cracked head, sticking valves. You are going to need to run more test to narrow it down. I would start with running Seafoam or some other type of injector cleaner through your system and then go from there.

You've done a great job of trouble shooting thus far. I would certainly suspect the injector after all of that. But, I didn't see anything about you replacing the spark plug itself. I would try that first as a crack in the insulator (even hairline) will cause mis-fires. If the spark plug doesn't fix the mis-fire, it cold be caused by a bad fuel injector, bad signal (like a loose harness or bad wire) to the fuel injector, or a leak or valve issue on that cylinder.

Check Engine Light on Yr2001 Ford Escape V-6 2wd. Code says: Misfire on cylinder #5. Dealer said compression is low in cylinder #5. This Escape needs to pass smog. What can we do?

If the engine has a P0305 DTC (Data Trouble Code) for a "cylinder 5 mis-fire detected", then the first thing to do is to do a compression test to determine if the mis-fire is actually being caused by a mechanical problem, or an electronic problem.

If the engine really does have low compression on the #5 cylinder then that is caused by a mechanical mis-fire and nothing electronic will repair it, and the most common causes for a mechanical mis-fire would be a burnt or bent intake or exhaust valve, a warped cylinder head or damaged head gasket, or a damaged piston. You can call around and find a repair shop that will do a "compression leak down test" if you want to know exactly what is causing the compression leak without any dis-assembly to the engine.

Iam having a miss fire every time i start my car on my 2001 chevy impala how do i set the timing with out taking it to the dealer i changed the plugs and the wiring and the pressure regulator still nothing...

The timing is not settable in a traditional sense of the days of distributors. The spark timing is controlled by the computer. If the computer is getting a bad signal, your spark timing will be off. Generally, a mis-fire isn't caused by bad spark timing. A sticking fuel injector, a bad or improperly seated spark plug wire, or a bad sensor will cause your mis-fires.

I just replaced the timing belt on my 95 ranger 2.3l, i have all timing marks perfectly aligned. i have applied proper tension to the belt also, the truck still mis fires horribly but everything is working...

If the coolant temperature sensor is sending false low temperature readings to the computer, it could cause the computer to send too much fuel through the injectors causing rough running, spark plug fouling, and poor gas mileage. Replace the sensor, clean or replace the plugs, and see if it runs better.

Would like to know if a 1997 Ranger has fuel injectors or a throutel body. I don't see where the injectors are located in the block. One more thing on this 2,3- 4 cyl It looks like it has two sets of plugs...

It is fuel injection and yes there are 8 spark plugs you are not seeing things. The spark plugs are paired so that as one spark plug fires on the compression stroke, the other spark plug fires on the exhaust stroke. The next time the coil is fired the order is reversed.

Runs rough and Terrible Mileage

Not sure if anyone has helped you on this one, but try a few things to kinda elimate some causes.
1) pull the plug wires one at a time to see which cyclinders aren't hitting
2) you can check the resistance of the coil on both the primary and the secondary sides for correct resistence
3) check the wires for shorts etc, which prob aint the wires
4) you can do a compression test on the cyclinders that aint firing
5) if all those pass ohmn the injectors all of them, on a 98 not sure what the reading should be but my 92 is .15 and anything within a few ohmns within each other or they read nothing replace those injectors.
I just replaced all 6 on mine solved my no fire issue in cyc 5 and now the mis has came back. I've yet to dive in to start my checking all over again. but here's another place to look, there is a ignition module on the truck think it should be near the battery.
