Question about 2001 Ford Ranger
1. Fuel (ethanol) clogging
2. Sensor (crankshaft or camshaft) mis-communication...bad sensor or signal to computer
3. Electrical harness (age cracking, corrosion)
4. Fuel filter clogged, not sending proper fuel pressure
5. Fuel pressure too low (fuel pump)
Not necessarily in order...but start with fuel, move to electrical inspection, then sensor...unless you have a CEL code to start with first.

Hi, the cam shaft sensor will be located Under the hood, center, upper engine area, mounted behind
rear of intake manifold, in the engine block.
This is a magnetic or hall effect sensor. It sends a signal to the computer relaying information about shaft speed, position and acceleration or deceleration. This information determines when the fuel/air mixture needs to be ignited and how much mixture is needed for the engine.
The possible causes of failure will be faulty housing or faulty wires as well. A faulty ECM could trigger a false alarm as well. this is highly unlikely but, possible in most cases. The most reported reasons is flat out sensor failure.

Sounds like it could be your Idle Air Control valve (IAC). The IAC does as it sounds and controls the idle in your vehicle. When these go bad, you can either clean them with a throttle body cleaner or replace them. Most people replace them as they are normally not very expensive and relatively easy to replace. The IAC is located on the throttle body which is where the air duct hose ends as it comes out of the air filter box. It is normally held on with a couple screws and just needs to be unplugged and plug the new one in. Please, please let me know if you have any further questions. If you can't find the location of the part let me know. Also if you don't think the IAC is your problem and have addition information that could point to something else, let me know. When you change the plug what color is the tip of the old one? This could be the answer to your problems. It should be a light beige or tan if everything is working properly.Just take one of the old plugs down to your local garage and get the mechanic to have a look at it. He'll be able to tell you why it keeps misfiring. Hope this helps.
