How do you replace front crank seal on 02 avalanche

The front crank seal is behind the oil pump on the LS series motors. There is also a seal at the crankshaft and harmonic balancer on the front timing cover. This is typical leak area. You can carefully remove the harmonic balancer with a puller, replace the timing cover seal and reinstall. Make sure not to pinch the seal lip You will have to have a special tool in order to re-install the balancer, which is extra long to squeeze it on the tapered shaft. I do not think the other crank seal is an issue since it drains to the pan behind the oil pump.

is it the front crankshaft seal or the rear the front you can do by removing the lower balancer replacing the seal the rear you have to pull the transmissionand flywheel to get to that seal but the one piece you may have to remove part of the oil pan

Do we take it that you want to replace the front crank seal?
If so it will almost certainly require that you drain the cooling system and remove the rad and surrounding cowl. The nut in the centre of the pulley is usually very tight and will likely require a 3/4 drive socket to free it. You will have to remove all the drive belts on the pulley and then remove the pulley. If its a manual trans then select top gear, have an assistant stand on the brakes while you undo the crank bolt. An auto is more difficult. If you have sufficient access then use an airwrench to loosen the bolt. Remove the pulley, pry the seal out, clean up, fit the new seal carefully to ensure its squarely seated in the housing, grease the seal edge and replace everything removed. The only thing you will need ideally is the torque figure for the crank bolt but you will get some idea when removing it. You could always mark the bolt head and the pulley face and retighten to the same position.

Both engines will require the removal of the timing belt to service the front crank seal. Both engines will also require the removal of the transmission to replace the rear main seal

either way way you would be looking at 3-4 hours for the front seal and 5 to 6 hours for the rear seal.

Just Have Your Front Crank Seal Replaced. The Water Pump Does not Need To Be Replaced At This Time. Try Taking It To Two More Mechanics. See what They Say. And Decide On A Fix.

I was told I have to replace the crankshaft seal and oil pan gasket on my 2000 chevy malibu and will cost approx. $380.00. Also is the rear main seal the same thing as the crankshaft seal??? Thanks!

Well sometimes.... the front crankshaft seal is usually called a crank seal, or the front timing cover seal but the rear crank seal is (usually) called the Rear Main crank seal. In order to replace the rear seal , the transmission will need to be removed. If its the front, then the harmonic balancer will be removed. $380 sounds cheap. As you will need a oil seal, oil pan gasket, oil, filter, labor and tax. Maybe even a lower engine mount.

most of the time its the front crank seal, those car are known for valve cover gasket and head gasket leaks, but the front would mostlikely be the front crank seal, you will have to remove the timing belt to replace the seal. good luck hope this is helpful.

R & r info. on front seal and crankshaft seal. Car is leaking lots of oil up to two quarts per day

Front crank shaft oil seal is located behind the crank shaft pulley (A.K.A. the harmonic balancer). If you look from under the car at the bottom pulley on the engine. It will be very wet and oily. This is not an easy job to replace the seal for the inexperienced.
