Question about 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck 2WD

1 Answer

Drivebelt keeps tearing off outside rib. I don't see any damage to any of the pulleys that I can see. Any idea's on what I could due?

All pulleys seem to turn ok, although I'm not sure if the tensioner is suppose to spin as much as it does.

Hi Kirk,

For the outside rib, look at alignment. Not always easy to find, but small amounts make noise and wear, sometimes.
Obviously, look for something along the path that the belt could be touching....
Sometimes a belt gets put on incorrectly, and it is not obvious until you take the belt off and look at the pulley.

The tensioner has zero option as to how much it spins. Tensioners and their bearings need close inspection.

Testimonial: "Is there a tool to check the alignment or is it just eye balling your best guess? I didn't notice anything touching the belt other then what was suppose to. As far as the tensioner I guess it shouldn't spin like a skateboard wheel then."

Ac compressor cluth is worn

Probably not a good idea as the drivebelt will wear out pretty fast. The belt may not have the proper grip to the pulley and will continually slip. Maybe the "cluth" is frozen and will not turn. Best to have an expert look closely at this.

I have a 91 taurus Sho I changed the alternator and put new belts on now the belts won't line up right so I bought a 4 rib instead of the original 6 rib belt for the alt belt and it's smaller so it isn't...

Check the crankshaft pulley, it may be walking out due the rubber vibration sandwich being deteriorated between the inner and outer ring. Pull the wheel house to access it.

The Serpentine belt keeps walking off the Crank shaft pulley by one rib as if the pulley moved away from the engine.. Is this where the harmonic balancer is. If so, is it difficult to change?

Before you change anything,,check and see if everything is in line..Also feel all the pulleys and make sure everything turns ok...If the powersteering pump has been replaced,,sometimes the pulley was not pressed on far enough..If it seem to be the harmonic balancer make sure its not damage and the bolt in the middle is tight...If you remove it..You remove middle bolt,,then you have to use a puller to remove the harmonic balancer itself..unusuall for the harmonic balancer to be bad unless it was hit by something

How to install belt

There should be a serpentine belt routing diagram under the hood somewhere. If not, all I can tell you is that serpentine belts wrap around 3/4 of the diameter of each pulley; and the ribbed pulleys contact the inside ribbed part of the belt and smooth pulleys wrap around the outside non-ribbed part of the belt. Also it cannot be installed wrong because it's length will be too long or too short if not wrapped correctly. Hope this helps!

2003 impala was making squealing noise from serpentine pulley area, finally belt slipped off. Changed both Tensioner and belt, same problem as before, belt slipped off again, pulleys seem to turn alright,...

Remove the belt, and check each pulley for resistance, or play. Each pulley should turn with ease, and have little to no play. Replace any pulleys that are found to be faulty. Check for pulley alignment. If the Crankshaft Pulley or any other pulley has loosened up, or not aligned properly, the belt will come right off. This is usually due to a frozen or faulty Idler Pulley or Tensioner Pulley. If all else checks out, ensure that the ribs are properly installed on each pulley, and no ribs are hanging off of any pulleys.

Replaced belt tensioner and now the belt is to long

Your complete post does not display. So, I can only assume the rest says your belt is to big or to small. No matter what the case may be you have routed the belt incorrectly on the pulleys. If the tensioner is the same then the belt could not change the length. Rember, the outside smooth side of the serpentine belt rides on the smooth pulley surface and the ribbed pulley rides on the ribbed side of the belt. Look on the radiator cowl or the bottom side of the hood and it should have a routing schematic for you to follow. If it is gone just follow the smooth or ribbed formula above. Good luck.

The diagram on a 1998 ford contour does not match the way to put on the serpentine belt. It's a diagram under the hood of my car but does not match that diagram Can u show me a picture

Follow the diagram again. Sometimes the belt goes on the inside or the outside of the belt. If you see a pulley that has a smooth surface only then the outside smooth part of the belt goes over it. When you see a pulley that has the ribs in it the belt matches the ribs. If you follow the pulleys you will get the belt on correctly. They can be confusing until you have replaced a few. But, just follow the pulley surfaces and you will get it. Remember match ribs to ribs and smooth to smooth. Good luck.

Make sure you have some good lighting, so you can see all of your pulleys at the same time from the side. See if they are all inline. Some of the Sunfire tension pulleys needed a spacer to line them up correctly. If they are all in line, check each of your pulleys to see if any of them have been worn down on one edge.
