If it just stopped while driving, the first thing I would check is to see if the cam shaft is turning ( broken timing belt/chain)
next thing would be to run the fault codes (you have a fault because the blinking light) to determine the exact cause of the fault and so save time and money guessing

My car sounds bad. it smells like gas when started. and it runs bad. also the check engine light is blinking

Check engine light is blinking a code, a auto parts store can read codes for you most the time its free, sound like maybe a few diff things, the EGR valve maybe stuck open or shut, or a O2 sensor, or Mass Air Flow Sensor, they do make a mass air flow cleaner thats the only thing you can use on it, the mass air sensor is just after your air filter on the tube that runs to the motor, the O2 sensors are on the pipes before and after the converter. Egr vents the non burnt gas back in your motor to re burn it the pipe coming off the manifold back up to the top of motor should see a egr would have a round diaphram looking thing on it. start with the codes being read at auto zone or O''rillys. i know on that that Rodeo you have to change the PCV valve about every 15,000 mi it vents the air out of the motor, run about $3, worst case senario it jumped time,

I have a 1989 honda civic hatchback and the engine check light turns on every other day after driving for about 10mins. I check the code and it indicates the O2 sensor but i changed it and it remains...

YOU MAY TRY A FEW THINGS YOUR SELF WITH OUT HAVEING IT SCANNED,AGAIN. Check egr opperation! Open or stuck closed.Vacumn line off or leaking!
Check radiator and reservoir coolant levels. Check Battery cables, clean if needed! Look for low battery cell water levels. Noisy exhaust leaks any where??

Car will not start when Mass Air Flow sensor is plugged in; when it is unplugged the car will idle and gradually idle up if you give it very little fuel at a time. Installed a used Mass Air Flow sensor...

hi there, when air flow unplugged, ecu goes into limp home mode ,a back up if something dies whilst driving. it sounds as if your used mass air flow sensor is faulty , they are more fragile than they look, one knock and these early fine wire models are gone. i replaced many when i worked at a volvo dealership a few years ago. hope this helps, and good luck.
