I had a problem with overdrive solenoid another kind? of car. It turned out to be a solenoid control wire with poor insulation which blew a fuse and "froze" the overdrive in third. Shop found the bad insulation and installed a spiral wire insulation wire binder. It's been more than 5years, and still working ok. You may have a similar issue.

Bet you didn't replace the harness inside did you? The TCC solenoid is connected to it. Also you would have needed to replace the boost valve and EPC. You would hv to remove the valve body to get to some of these. Being a 97 this would be risky. I would have pulled the transmission and gone threw it. Always the chance it is the torque converter or the OD clutches are burnt.

Any idea it might be after replacing all that already?

  • Randy Ohler Apr 08, 2015

Bad seals and bad OD clutches. And the torque converter. In the channel plate is the boost valve, This an automatic Swap whether I do a valve body or rebuild. When you pull the valve body, There are 10 check balls thatcan and will fall out. ^ on the valve body side and for on the channel plate. They must go back in. But iw ouldn't worry about replacing the boost valve. Your problem is internal.

This year of GM Transmission doesn't have a vacuum modulator, it is all electronically controlled. And yes a shift solenoid can cause this but that should turn the check engine light on and set a fault code.

I own a 1998 Chevy Blazer 4wd that is on its 3rd transmission and I'm having the same issue where when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear it's slipping badly my rpm's rev up to 3500 and I have to take my foot...

this is a known issue with the gm 4L60E transmission. the valve body in transmission causes this. if it is wore, then less fluid is sent to shift selonoids. thus causing torque convertor not to lock up, and this causes slipping. if it slips 2 consecutive trips then the transmission detects this and should turn on check engine light. ( p1870 ). you can see if the tcc solinoid is bad. but if not its usually the valve body in tranny.

Dodge intrepid new solinoid still won't shift the gear to next.

I believe these models have a transmission temperature sensor. If the transmission gets to hot it puts the car into limp mode until it cools down. A faulty sensor may be your problem. Also you may consider installing a transmission fluid cooler. Most cars have the transmission lines routed through the radiator to cool the fluid but radiators get hot. You want to keep the fluid as cool as possible. Ask your local parts supplier about a transmission cooler. There like 30 bucks but can save you a rebuild later :)

4x4 will not work, lights on dash won't even come on. transmission shifts way to early also, don't know if that part of problem.

could be two problems one the solinoid in the transmission is stuck but this is electric it is not machanical if your four wheel drive is stuck there is a solinoid that controls that also that solinoid also controls the light switch that tells you that you are in four wheel drive...
first check all fuses for that are fuses on most trucks
most are in the box under the hood also check each relay
if everything is good (check the solinoid to see if it is getting electric if it is then replace the solinoid

yes change fluid. if that dosnt work buy new shift solinoids. and replace them. also check all the wiring from transmission to pcm and from conector to solinoids when u take the pan off. just disconect the solinoids. and use a digital multimeter innva brand put it on continuity and touch wire after wire till it beeps indicating wiring is touching . some will beep because thay are still conected and would have to remove transmission to disconect them. i just had this exact problem on my 94 sls . i replaced solinoid a-b and did a fluid change and checked the conections going to the transmission. and it runns good now

Indications are that the transmission has some serious issues. You may want to call a reputable local transmission shop and explain the situation, including the codes. They can give you your options. But I suspect you need the transmission rebuilt or replaced.

TCC valve is most likely worn out, needs rebuilt transmission with new rebuilt converter. Most likely P1870 shift code.

Transmission has to be manually down shifted at stops

I have a similar issue with my vehicle. I either have to shift to neutral or it stalls. The advice I received was to unplug the 4 prong connector at the front of the transmission. What truly is the problem, as I was told, it the overdrive lockup solinoid inside the trans cover. I looked at replacing it and it looks like a tough job to do, lots of brackets to remove to remove the cover. Looks like the solinoid is on top of the trans, but getting to it is another story. Good luck.
