Yes ive replaced the iac module and my pcm for my 1999 dodge stratus and still my check engine still comes up P505.can pls help me

Broken wires. If you have an OHM/Volt meter and know how to use it. I will tell you how to check them. You will also need a wiring pin out for the IAC motor and PCM plugs.

    Three wires at the plug. The outer wires are power and ground. turn the key. Check the power wire to the ground wire, then check the power wire to the negative post on the battery. You should have voltage at both places. The check the ground wire to the positive side of the battery, it should show voltage. If they are good, then check the wire for the IAC to the ECM. No more than 5 ohms. More than that replace the wire. Also check the positive and ground wire to the ECM. Again no more than 5 Ohm's. If all the wires check out good, look at replacing the ECM.

Why would my check engine light come on and speedometer stop working at the same time on my 99 dodge stratus?


there is a code set in the pcm(computer). it could be a problem with the vehicle speed sensor(VSS) that would cause the speedometer to stop working turning on the check engine light to get things checked out.

Description & Operation

Not for Dodge Stratus Sedan
The idle air control motor (IAC) attaches to the throttle body. It is an electric stepper motor. The PCM adjusts engine idle speed through the idle air control motor to compensate for engine load, coolant temperature or barometric pressure changes. The throttle body has an air bypass passage that provides air for the engine during closed throttle idle. The idle air control motor pintle protrudes into the air bypass passage and regulates airflow through it.
The PCM adjusts engine idle speed by moving the IAC motor pintle in and out of the bypass passage. The adjustments are based on inputs the PCM receives. The inputs are from the throttle position sensor, crankshaft position sensor, coolant temperature sensor, MAP sensor, vehicle speed sensor and various switch operations (brake, park/neutral, air conditioning).

When engine rpm is above idle speed, the IAC is used for the following functions:


Off-idle dashpot Deceleration air flow control A/C compressor load control (also opens the passage slightly before the compressor is engaged so that the engine rpm does not dip down when the compressor engages)

Removal & Installation

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the IAC electrical connector.
  3. Remove the IAC mounting screws.
  4. Remove the IAC.

To Install:
  1. Install the IAC to the throttle body.
  2. Tighten mounting screws to 5.1 Nm (45 inch lbs.) torque.
  3. Attach electrical connector to the IAC.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

2001 maxima engine service light for p505 looking to find out how much would this cost for repair


This should be a fairly straightforward diagnosis. Start by clearing the fault codes. Then unplug the IAC and start the engine (This may cause other IAC codes to set. Just ignore them for now). If the P0505 code doesn't reset, replace the IAC. It is internally shorting one of the IAC circuits. If the code DOES return after unplugging the IAC and starting the engine, then you know it isn't the IAC motor. Visually check the wiring harness all the way back to the PCM. You may need to visually inspect the harness by removing all the insulation off the wires. It is possible that the wires could be shorting to eachother or to other wires in the harness.

If there are no wiring problems, and the code keeps returning with the IAC unplugged, you can check the PCM by removing the IAC wires from the PCM connector (or clipping the wires in a location where they can be repaired easily) and then start the engine (If you're not sure, don't do it. Take it to a qualified professional). Now if the code doesn't reset there is a problem with the wiring. Check for continuity on all the IAC wires. Any resistance points to a problem. Check for voltage on any(At this point there shouldn't be any voltages on the wires because they're clipped at one end and unplugged at the IAC). Repair as necessary. But if the P0505 code DOES reset after removing the IAC wires from the PCM connector(or clipping them), replace the PCM, there's a problem internally on the IAC control circuit.

Around $200.00 for parts, labor and fees.

1999 Ram 3500 Wagon with 5.9L has eng Lt on. Idles high at red lights & surges at times. Code scanned is P0505. Do I need idle control valve or computer to make control valve work properly.


The IAC stepper motor is mounted to the throttle body, and regulates the amount of air bypassing the control of the throttle plate. As engine loads and ambient temperatures change, engine rpm changes. A pintle on the IAC stepper motor protrudes into a passage in the throttle body, controlling air flow through the passage. The IAC is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to maintain the target engine idle speed.

At idle, engine speed can be increased by retracting the IAC motor pintle and allowing more air to
pass through the port, or it can be decreased by restricting the passage with the pintle and diminishing the amount of air bypassing the throttle plate.
The IAC is called a stepper motor because it is moved (rotated) in steps, or increments. Opening the IAC opens an air passage around the throttle blade which increases RPM.

The PCM uses the IAC motor to control idle speed (along with timing) and to reach a desired MAP during decel (keep engine from stalling).

The IAC motor has 4 wires with 4 circuits. Two of the wires are for 12 volts and ground to supply electrical current to the motor windings to operate the stepper motor in one direction. The other 2 wires are also for 12 volts and ground to supply electrical current to operate the stepper motor in the opposite direction. To make the IAC go in the opposite direction, the PCM just reverses polarity on both windings. If only 1 wire is open, the IAC can only be moved 1 step (increment) in either direction. To keep the IAC motor in position when no movement is needed, the PCM will energize both windings at the same time. This locks the IAC motor in place.

In the IAC motor system, the PCM will count every step that the motor is moved. This allows the
PCM to determine the motor pintle position. If the memory is cleared, the PCM no longer knows the position of the pintle. So at the first key ON, the PCM drives the IAC motor closed, regardless of where it was before. This zeros the counter. From this point the PCM will back out the IAC motor and keep track of its position again.

When engine rpm is above idle speed, the IAC is used for the following:
  • Off-idle dashpot (throttle blade will close quickly but idle speed will not stop quickly)
  • Deceleration air flow control
  • A/C compressor load control (also opens the passage slightly before the compressor is engaged so that the engine rpm does not dip down when the compressor engages)
  • Power steering load control
The PCM can control polarity of the circuit to control direction of the stepper motor.

Solutions:
  1. First, try removing the IAC Valve, and cleaning the valve and the opening in the throttle body where the IAC Valve installs using Carburetor Cleaner. Ensure that the IAC Valve hole in the throttle body is not clogged, and is free from carbon deposits, etc. Have the ECM reset and check for the problem again.
  2. If the Check Engine Light comes back on, replace the IAC Valve. Have the ECM reset and check for the problem again.
  3. If the Check Engine Light still comes on, although highly unlikely, you may have a clogged throttle body, faulty wiring or connector, or faulty ECM (very unlikely since the vehicle runs).

The code P1698 is: No CCD messages from TCM. That means the communication between the Transmission Control Module and the Power Control Module is lost. Sometimes this happens when a PCM, or TCM is replaced without being flashed, a bad connection at the PCM, TCM, or a bad TCM. Hope this helps.

2004 dodge stratus will not idle after battery change


Low voltage during engine start means there might not be enough electrical poop to actually accomplish all steps as commanded, which is where the problem arises. Once lost, the PCM will believe the IAC to be in a much farther open position than it actually is, so it sees no need to open further. Start-stall or no-start episodes follow

This would be a good time to reset your IAC step count. It can be done with a battery disconnect of about 30 seconds, which will occur automatically if you happen to replace the battery.

Roll the key on and wait 5 seconds before starting the engine. This gives the PCM time to relearn IAC step count without the complication of trying to keep the engine running. After five seconds, go ahead and crank the engine. It should start, flare and settle to a nice idle if the IAC motor and controls are in good shape. While it's rare for an IAC motor to give this type of trouble in my experience, your unit may be 6 years old now... and they do wear out. If the reset prodecure is ineffective... or it works for a little while and reverts to stalling... you may have a bad IAC motor. It's the 4-wire device on the back side of your throttle body, removed with a #25 Torx driver. Perform a relearn after installation.
If not effective, you need to clean the throttle body. I'd expect it to start and idle regardless of TB deposits, but cleaning deposit buildup from the throttle body blades and bore will restore minimum airflow lost over time and will help support idle control. Minimum airflow is basically a safety net for the idle system... something that supplies up to 70% of the air needed for idle control to take some of the load off the IAC controls.
