Do you know if the alternator is charging on the car ?
Its possible the circuit between the alternator and the battery is open, such as a blown fuse.

How long did the 2nd alt. last before it died? The voltage regulator is, I believe, attached to the alternator. Have u had the voltage regulator checked?

SOURCE: changed alternator in 2000 mpv battery comes on and off

Check the large fusible link labeled ALT in the under hood fuse box. If this fuse gets blown, the alternator wont be able to charge even if it IS new, because the ALT circuit is open.

SOURCE: possible bad alternator?

I went through three alternators before we found a good one for our saturn sl2. Now she has been good for two years. All I did was go back to where we bought it from, they hooked up the alternator to a machine and gave us a new one when it read that it was faulty.

SOURCE: Battery keeps going dead

Hello raiderfan520....Have the battery "load tested" this will tell ya if the battery is defective, one bad cell will draw the others down. If it's bad and only 12 months old you should have warranty left. (free replacement or pro-rated)...If your battery load tests OK, then you have an amperage drain going on while the vehicle is parked.
This is called a "parasitic drain"
Make sure no interior lights, under hood, trunk lights...etc. are remaining on. I hope you don't need the following information i'm about to give you, but here are the steps to locating a parasitic drain.....

  1. Remove the negative side battery cable from the negative battery terminal.
  2. Attach an ammeter(this measures amperage) between the negative cable and the negative battery post. wait a few seconds to several minutes for the car to go into sleep mode. i.e. when you make the contact with the test light the cars computer systems "wake up" after a bit of time they will go to "sleep".
  3. If the ammeter is reading over 25-50 milliamps, something is using too much battery power.
  4. Go to the fuse panel(s) and remove fuses, one at a time. Pull the main fuses (higher amp ratings)last. Be sure to observe the ammeter after pulling each fuse.
  5. Watch for the ammeter to drop to acceptable drain. The fuse that reduces the drain is the draw. Consult the owners' manual or service manual to find what circuits are on that fuse.
  6. Check each device (circuit) on that fuse. Stop each lamp, heater, etc. to find the drain.
  7. Repeat steps 1&2 to test your repair. The ammeter will tell you exact numbers. There you go...everything you never wanted to know... I hope this will fixya up...good luck.

SOURCE: Low voltage, the battery runs low when running the car

What is the voltage you are reading? Is it below 13.2 or so? Also have you checked the current with the engine off to see if something else is working that should not be on. I ran across this twice while working on a truck and car. A relay that was wore out keep trying to close and would drain the battery every couple of months. Sometimes you can hear them clicking or buzzing. Touching them sometimes they are warm or real hot. But that is not a sure sign it is bad. In my Trailblaze they get hot but are ok. Another thougth is the belt on your alt, correctly set to spin it at the right voltage. I have ran across this many times lately with serpatine belts.

How do I know if it is alternator or starter ???

the starter only turns the motor when the key is turned. the alternator charges the car when its running. if its dead you left something on to kill the battery. charge the battery. then get the charging system tested. advance autozone and I am sure other parts store can check the car for free

My battery dies i replaced a brand new alternator but still dosen't charge tomthe battery

The battery most likely has dead cells and not charging due to the alternator .The alternator is doing what it should, your battery just can't hold the charge the alternator is putting out. Go have the battery tested at a local auto zone or advance auto store. Free to check

The Alternator does not have enough current to charge the battery, replace the alternator.

DASH LIGHTS DIMMED, HEAD LIGHT DIMMED, THEN THE "CHECK BATTERY" LIGHT CAME ON BUT IT STARTS UP AND DRIVES FINE? DO I JUST NEED TO CHANGE THE BATTERY?

Sounds like the alternator output is low. Not enough output to charge the battery. Your local advance auto store can check this for free to be sure. It could be the battery not holding a charge like it should. Check it first with Adavance

Car won't start

Have the charging system checked out .
Have the battery load tested first.
If you want to do this testing yourself its pretty easy.
a) need a fully charged battery (charge battery 3min charge)
b) you need special equiptment to do a load test so the next best thing is open circuit test. Use a DVM
and hook it up to battery you should have min. of 12 volts. if not charge battery or replace it.
c) Leave DVM on battery start car and measure voltage with all accessories on and off should be between 13.5 and 14.5 volts.
If this is ok you know the alternator is charging that battery .
If you don't get 13.5 to 14.5 turn off vehicle and start looking at battery cables and wires behind the alternator for corrosion.
If cables are good and wires behind alternator are good then replace alternator.
