Why my seat heat/cool light flash on then off doesn't heat or cool?

When I disconnected battery, replaced starter I connected battery cranked vehicle. Day or so later tried to turn on seat heat light flashed on then off. I checked fuses all ok. What should I check next?

You will need to replace the crank angle/position sensor near the crank pulley. A photo of the sensor is attached. The sensors wear out due to heat and cold cycles and internal corrosion.

Removal & Installation

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.

    Negative battery cable
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    NOTE To disconnect the hard-shell connector from the solenoid S terminal, grasp the plastic shell and pull off; do not pull on the wire. Pull straight off to prevent damage to the connector and S terminal.


    Starter terminal cover Terminal nut and separate the battery starter cable from the starter motor Solenoid S terminal connector, if equipped with a starter mounted solenoid
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Starter motor retaining bolts Starter motor from the vehicle

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Starter motor and retaining bolts. Tighten the bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs. (20-27 Nm). Bttery starter cable and a terminal nut to the starter motor. Tighten the terminal nuts to 79 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Slenoid S terminal connector, if equipped with a starter mounted solenoid Sarter solenoid safety cap, if equipped
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Ngative battery cable
  4. Start the engine several times to check starter motor operation.

To install:
  1. The installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the starter retaining bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs. (20-27 Nm)

4.6L, 5.4L & 6.8L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove or disconnect the following:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  3. Remove starter solenoid protective cap.
  4. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connections.
  5. Remove the bolts and the starter.

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the starter bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)

7.3L Engine
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
  3. Raise the front of the truck and install jackstands beneath the frame. Firmly apply the parking brake and place blocks in back of the rear wheels.

Testing & Troubleshooting

Feed Circuit Test

  1. Make sure the battery is fully charged.
  2. Disconnect the Inertia Fuel Shutoff (IFS) switch.
  3. Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid S-terminal and the battery positive (+) terminal.
  4. Connect the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter positive lead to the battery positive (+) post. Connect negative lead to the starter solenoid M-terminal.

  5. Engage the remote starter switch. Read and record the voltage. The voltage reading should be 0.5 volt or less.
  6. If the voltage reading is 0.5 volt or less, go to the Motor Ground Circuit Component Test.
  7. If the voltage reading is greater than 0.5 volt, indicating excessive resistance, move the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter negative lead to the starter solenoid B-terminal and repeat the test. If the voltage reading at the B-terminal is lower than 0.5 volt, the concern is either in the connections at the starter solenoid or in the solenoid contacts.
  8. Remove the cables from solenoid B-, S- and M-terminals. Clean the cables and connections and reinstall the cables to the correct terminals. Repeat Steps 3 through 6. If the voltage drop reading is still greater than 0.5 volt when checked at the M-terminal or less than 0.5 volt when checked at the B-terminal, the concern is in the solenoid contacts. Install a new starter motor.
  9. If the voltage reading taken at the solenoid B-terminal is still greater than 0.5 volt after cleaning the cables and connections at the solenoid, the concern is either in the positive (+) battery cable connection or in the positive battery cable itself.
  10. By moving the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter negative lead toward the battery and checking each mechanical connection point, the excessive voltage drop can be located. When the high reading disappears, the last mechanical point that was checked is the concern. Repair or install a new connection as required.

Ground Circuit Test
A slow cranking condition can be caused by resistance in the ground or return portion of the cranking circuit. Check the voltage drop in the ground circuit as follows:
  1. Disconnect the inertia fuel shutoff switch.
  2. Connect a remote starter switch between the starter solenoid S-terminal and the battery positive (+) terminal.
  3. Connect the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter positive lead to the starter motor housing (the connection must be clean and free of rust or grease). Connect the negative lead to the negative (-) battery terminal.

  4. Engage the remote starter switch and crank the engine. Read and record the voltage reading. The reading should be 0.2 volt or less.
  5. If the voltage drop is more than 0.2 volt, clean the negative cable connections at the battery and body connections, and retest.
  6. If the voltage drop is greater than 0.2 volt, determine which way the current is flowing in the cable.
  7. Connect the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter positive lead to the end of the cable nearest battery positive.
  8. Connect the multimeter negative lead to the terminal at the other end of the cable.
  9. Crank the engine and observe the voltage reading. The voltage reading should be 0.2 volt or lower. If the voltage drop is too high, clean the terminal ends. Retest, and if still high, install a new cable. If the voltage reading is less than 0.2 volt and the engine still cranks slowly, install a new starter motor.

Voltage Drop Test

WARNING When servicing the starter motor or performing other underhood work in the vicinity of the starter motor, be aware that the heavy gauge battery input lead at the starter solenoid is "electrically hot" at all times.

WARNING A protective cap or boot is provided over the battery input terminal on all vehicle lines and must be installed after servicing. Be sure to disconnect the battery ground cable before servicing the starter motor.
Always make the Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter connections at the component terminal rather than at the wiring end connector. Making a connection at the wiring end connector could result in false readings because the meter will not pick up a high resistance between the wiring connector and the component.

Of course the first thing to do is have the battery tested, but that doesn't seem to be at fault here, if the lights and the AC blower work, but it still must be checked. I think the real problem here is a detective starter motor Solenoid, this is the large high current solenoid that is bolted to the starter, it is the click you hear, the click means the solenoid is operating but the reason that the starter doesn't crank the engine is that the heavy electrical contacts that send power to the starter DC motor are burnt and not allowing current to follow, this is a common problem in Japanese designed starter motors no matter which car they are in they are all made by one company, and that is Denso Electric. Most shops will not change just the starter solenoid, they want to replace the starter assembly, the reason being they feel they can't guarantee the job if the whole Assembly isn't replaced, this is especially true on high miles cars and trucks. This is about a 2 hour job.
Here is the job procedure from the manual:


Make sure you have the anti-theft code for the radio, and the navigation system, then write down the radio channel presets. Make sure the ignition switch is OFF.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions section.
  2. Remove the left side engine compartment cover.
  3. Disconnect the negative cable and positive cable.
  4. Remove the battery hold-down bracket, then remove the battery and battery tray.
  5. Remove the harness clamp.
  6. Disconnect the starter cable from the B terminal, then disconnect the BLK/WHT wire from the S terminal.
  7. Remove the two bolts holding the starter, then remove the starter.

To install:
  1. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Tighten the starter bolts to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).
  2. Make sure the crimped side of the ring terminal is facing out.
  3. Connect the battery positive cable to the battery first, then connect the negative cable.
  4. Start the engine to make sure the starter works properly.
  5. Enter the anti-theft codes for the radio and the navigation system, then enter the customer's radio channel presets.

If he installed a new or remanufatured starter, I would suspect a weak battery possibly. If he installed a used starter, I would say the starter is bad. A hot engine is harder to crank than a cold engine and if the starter is marginal it will act the way you described. Try boosting your vehicle the next time it's hot, or get your battery load tested by a reputable shop that doesn't sell batteries. I have had experience with remanufactured starters that were no better than the unit I removed from the vehicle. Have him get a second reman and see if that doesn't solve the problem.

What happenes when you try to jump start the vehicle? If it starts - then it is most likely the battery or alternator. If it doesn't start then the solenoid or the starter or the engine. To get it down to the starter or engine - disconnect the serpentine belt and turn the crankshaft with a wrench. If it turns - then it is your starter/solenoid.

Replacing a new starter on a 93 isuzu rodeo


Don't know what size motor you have because you didn't post it so please pick the proper one:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. If equipped, it may be necessary to disconnect and remove the EGR pipe to access all the starter bolts.
  4. Tag and disconnect the starter battery and control wiring at the starter.
  5. If equipped, remove the starter bracket and/or heat shield.
  6. Remove the starter-to-engine bolts.
  7. Move the starter away from the engine and down to remove from the vehicle. Some starter may be installed with shims between the starter and engine. When the starter is removed, these shims may fall out. Do not loose them.
To install:
  1. Install the starter and shims, if equipped to the engine. Align the mounting bolt holes and insert the bolts. Hand-tighten the bolts.
  2. Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 30–34 ft. lbs. (39–44 Nm).
  3. Install the starter bracket and/or heat shield, if equipped.
  4. Connect the battery and starter control electrical wires to the starter.
  5. If the EGR pipe was removed, install it.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Start the vehicle to make sure the starter functions correctly.

  3. Label and disconnect the battery and starter control wires from the starter.
  4. If equipped, remove the starter bracket and/or heat shield.

  6. Lower the starter from the engine. If any shims are present, keep them for reinstallation purposes.
To install:
  1. Install the starter and shims, if equipped, to the engine. Tighten the mounting bolts to 30–34 ft. lbs. (39–44 Nm).
  2. Install the starter bracket and/or heat shield, if equipped.
  3. Reconnect the electrical connectors to the starter.
  4. Lower the vehicle.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
  6. Start the vehicle to make sure the starter functions correctly.

Sounds like a connection problem/error. When you replaced the starter solenoid, do you remember how many wires you disconnected and reconnected?

Was there any indication ( sparks, etc) of accidentally causing a short when you replaced the solenoid?

Your initial problem of no start but hearing the click sound is almost a sure fire indication that the starter is NG. If the solenoid clicks, that means that it is applying 12 volts to the starter.

Starter Escalade, Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, Denali, Denali XL, Yukon XL, 1999 – 2005 REMOVAL&INSTALLATION
Removal & Installation
4.8L, 5.3L And 6.0L Engines
CAUTION Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Protective shields, as necessary
    • Starter solenoid shield
    • Starter-to-transmission close out cover bolt
    • Engine oil level sensor connection
    • On 4WD, front axle mounting bracket through bolt nut
  4. Reposition the front axle mounting bracket through bolt until the bolt tip is flush with the support bushing. Do not remove the bolt.
    • Mounting bolts from the engine block. Slide the starter forward until the starter clears the transmission.
    • Starter transmission close out cover
    • Positive battery cable and wiring harness from the starter

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Starter
    • Positive battery cable to the starter. Tighten the nut to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
    • Starter transmission close out cover
    • Mounting bolts to the engine block and tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm)
  2. Reposition the front axle mounting bracket through bolt until the bolt is fully seated.
    • Front axle mounting bracket through bolt nut and tighten to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
    • Engine oil level sensor connection
    • Starter-to-transmission close out cover bolt
    • Starter solenoid shield
    • Protective shields as necessary
  3. Remove the safety stands.
  4. Lower the vehicle.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable.
5.7L And 7.4L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Negative battery cable
    • Mounting bolts and shims
    • Wires
    • Heat shield
    • Starter
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Starter
    • Wires. Torque battery wire nut to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm), and ignition nut to 18 inch lbs. (2 Nm).
    • Heat shield. Torque the bolts to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm) and the nuts to 35 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
    • Mounting bolts and shim. Torque the bolts to 33 ft lbs. (45 Nm).
    • Negative battery cable

  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    • Positive cable from the solenoid
    • Engine harness ground nut and ground from the solenoid
    • Mounting bolts and starter
    • Heat shield bolts, nut and shield, if necessary
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Heat shield, bolts and nut if removed. Tighten the bolts to 35 inch lbs. (3 Nm) and the nut to 44 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    • Starter and bolts. Tighten to 37 ft. lbs. (50 Nm).
    • Ground wire and nut. Tighten to 30 inch lbs. (3.4 Nm).
    • Positive cable and nut. Tighten to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm).
  2. Reposition the front axle mounting bracket through bolt until the bolt is fully seated.
    • Front axle mounting bracket through bolt nut and tighten to 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm)
    • Negative battery cable
