First thing I would check is to make sure the belt tension is ok. If it is and you are having a hard time with power assist, make sure ball joints and tie rod ends are not sticky/seized. If all checks out I would suspect a weak power steering pump

SOURCE: steering wheel hard to turn on my 1989 toyota camry

power steering belt broken or fell off, or the pump is out of oil. The pump is down on the right hand side (passenger) between the fire wall and the engine. You should be able to see if the belt is still on. Check the resevoir for oil. It is on the same side. It's a little plastic pot with a dipstick. Let me know how you make out.

SOURCE: 2002 Chevy silverado 2500HD No power steering or brakes

The shaft in your power steering pump has broken. Your brakes work off of a system known as Hydra-Boost. If this shaft is broken then your steering and brakes are lost. I contacted GM after I had my power steering pump replaced and they sent me a check for the cost of my repairs. My truck was not under warranty or recalled but earlier models (2500HD) had been recalled for the power steering pump shaft. The pump was the same part number for my 2002 2500HD as the recalled years. Good Luck!

SOURCE: Locked Ignition but steering wheel free

Push gear selector up past park and it should loosen up, or press hard on the brake pedal. Shifter up past park usually loosens it up. Common GM problem.

Hard turning left

If it has power steering better be looking at replacing the power steering pump. It takes more power to turn the wheels at a stop then when moving I have had that problem and it was the pump. Good luck O by the way it is not hard to replace the pump you can do it in about an hour all you need is a power steering pump pulley puller. You can rent one at any auto zone store.

I have a 2005 Chevy cobalt. I went to turn my car on and my key will not turn and the steering wheel is also locked. Anyone know how to fix this?

I don't know if this is a for sure fix but this also happens on the wife's cobalt. I press on the brake and slide the key in. I try to easily turn the key and wiggle the steering wheel back and forth all while pressing the brake. It eventually lets the key turn and the wheel will turn normally. What it is doing actually is a safety/theft feature to lock your steering wheel so it will not move if someone tries driving it away being hard wired. Anywho try the above it usually works for me.

Hard steering

It is normal for a car without power steering to be difficult to turn the wheels when the car is stationary or at very low speeds. Once you are moving above say 10 mph the steering should be fairly easy.

Have you bled the power steering?
Jack up front so both front wheels are off the ground. start and warm up
turn wheel from stop to stop slow until squeak stops
make sure you keep filling it as you go.
This may take a lot of turns.

Let me know if this helps

Pull the steering wheel alittle hard til you can feel it move from stop to stop. Hold it in the center of that little bit of feeplay and then turn the key. It should unlock the wheel.

Try moving the steering wheel left and right hard while trying to turn the key. Let me know if you have any more trouble. If the steering wheel is turned and against its stop then the key wont turn.

Steering wheel make a noise when turn left

its due to low/no fluid level in the power steering reservoir.Check the fluid in the power steering. If it is low the car will make noise when you turn the wheel. the internal parts gets rubbed hard and noise occurs. refill the fluid and let it reset for some time then try it will get the fluency to move smooth and noise will get stopped. -------- This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution if helped.thank you for using fixya.
