Remove the ignition coils or plug wires if they are located on/in the cover. Unbolt the cover and remove. Discard old rubber gasket and clean gasket channel of any oil or sludge formation. Install new gasket in channel securely and reinstall cover making sure not to dislodge gasket and reinstall bolts. The rear cover may require the removal of the upper intake manifold for access to the cover depending on which engine the car is equipped with. May not be a job for someone without engine experience

Rear valve cover

The 2 motor mounts that go to the radiator support hold the
engine verticle,if you pull the bolts that hold the mounts to the
engine you will be able to "roll" the engine foreward, giving you
the room to get at the rear.

Went to change fouled plugs. decovered there was oil in the spark plugs chamber?

make sure oil is not coming down from bad valve cover gasket, check for leaks at intake gasket, those are most likely culprit

I am trying to determine if it is worth fixing the timing chain on the 2000 oldsmobile intrigue. i hear they are fairly expensive. we just replaced a cracked radiator and the serpentine belt. The mechanic...

Wow. Only worth it if the mechanic is trustworthy and you can't afford to get out from under it. It is a pretty complicated repair. The car probably isn't worth more than a couple thousand dollars, depending on where you are located. Why do they want to replace the timing chain? How many miles are on the engine?

How to change the pcv valve on an 1999 oldsmobile

Remove plastic "sight shield" / engine cover (two black 13mm nuts on top). PCV valve is plugged into front (left) camshaft cover at the end furthest from pulleys. Check the elbow - if cracked one for Chryslers that Autozone sells in bubblepack will fit - just check the size with the new one.

Burnt Oil Smell

Check carefully around the valve covers, this is the area that leaks most frequently occur, and being located next to the exhaust manifold can easily cause the burning smell. There is a very easy to replace gasket under the cover. Other possibilities, shop or you when changed or added oil spilled a bit and that has worked down to the exhaust manifold and is causing the burnt oil smell. Last possibility is that you do have a slow leak on the underside of the engine that is blowing back onto the exhaust system causing the smell.

Oil leak in 1998 olds intrigue does not appear to be the rocker arm cover gaskets. Any advice on how to pinpoint the leak ?

pull the valve cover gaskets, clean them and replace them, there is no cheater way to do this. To pin point leak you'l need to look closely at the covers if oil is running down the sides towards front or back of motor (theres 2 covers, one front, one rear) if it is, you may be able to tighten bolts, but be careful not to strip them. If they are tight, youl need to change the cover gaskets
