It is a good idea to have one. The cover protects the belt from dirt and oil leaks as well as helping to keep it dry when driving in heavy rain. The last thing you need is premature belt failure especially with an interference engine.

It has a timing chain. A chain will typically last the life of the motor. The only time it really needs to be replaced is if it is making noise. The only time I replace them is if I have the front cover off to repair a leak. Since pulling the front cover is most of the labor its not a bad idea to replace the chain as long as it is right there.

The other exception is if the engine is starting to approach some really high mileage. Say around the 200,000 mile or more range. The old timing chain doesn't owe you anything and it certainly can't hurt to install a new one.

You do not really need a manual to change the belts. All Mitsubishi cars pretty much hide the water pump under the timing belt. You should buy all new belts for the car and if you have 150,000+ miles consider replacing the water pump at the same time.
You will have to take off the power steering belt .
First , take off the negative battery cable so you do not blow an expensive fuse on the positive battery cable clamp. Facing the back of the car , reach UNDER the alternator and loosen the bolt on the bottom right side, now loosen the bolt on the adjuster block on top, you can now turn the adjuster bolt and move the alternator to change the belt.
To take off the steering pump belt on the front of the motor, you need to loosen the nut on the back side of the pulley it holds the adjuster pulley in place . With the adjuster pulley loose , you can use the adjuster bolt to move the pulley to adjust the steering pump belt.
Now take off the upper belt cover, support the motor, take off the motor mount, jack up the right front corner of the car, take off the front right tire, take off the engine plastic under cover.
Line up the TDC timing mark on the cover to the mark on the pulley, take off the lower pulleys,
take off the lower engine cover, observe the timing marks/arrows and highlight with paint (crank marks and cam marks should all line up if not , rotate the crankshaft one full turn.), loosen the timing belt tensioner pulley ,take off the timing belt, counter balancer belt if there is one. Now you can unbolt the water pump, scrape the gasket, and replace it.
The good news is, if you have tools,a compressor, an air gun(for lower pulley bolt), patience , and four to eight hours to kill, you can actually save money and do it your self.

Water pump replacement

You dont want to hear this, really should change the timing belt once you get into the cam cover. Its not all that much more labor and the belts are cheap. Having a belt brake will destroy the valves and sometimes the pistons as well. You do know the pump is driven off the belt, right? You have to take it off anyway.

Ive put a new waterpump an timing belt into my 94 gsr an i need to no how to set the timing on the top end. IM REALLY GRATEFULL IF ANYONE NO'S THE SETTINGS????????

There are specific marks on the cam pully and the crank pully that line up with marks on the block for the crank pully and on the timing belt cover for the cam pully they need to be lined up to get correct timing.

Cam seal leak

Replacing the cam seal is really more time consuming than difficult. The EJ-25 motor requires the removal of front covers, timing belt, and the timing gear for the cam that needs replaced. The seal can be replaced without removing the valve cover or cam. The installation is very important on setting the cam timing. Good luck and have a great day.

Its not really easy to explain over the net. But the front engine cover has to be removed to gain acces to the front of the cams. You will need to remove most al of your belt drive accessories to do this. Its also critical to ensure you line up the timing marks correctly when re assembling (or timing will never be right). You may also want to replace the water pump at this time too...

Knocking nosie on value covers or timing belt

a clack clack or tick tick sound is the lifters.  A deeper thumping is a rod knock or piston slap.  You need to take it to a mechanic for an opinion.  Sadly it sounds serious.  You can use a rod or a hose to pin-piont the area of the noise.

There isn't really an easy way, as the water pump is driven by the timing belt, requiring removal of the timing covers, timing belt etc to replace. This is definitely a job for a mechanic, or at least a skilled handyman with a lot of experience with timing belt replacement. The timing belt and tensioner will need to be replaced at the same time, but at least then you know that it will not need to done again for 100,000 kms (60,000 miles).

Jumped timing?

It really does sound like the timing went out of whack. The timing belt should be replaced periodically, according to your owner's manual. It may have worn and stretched just enough to slip over a cog a bit. Remove the timing belt covers and check the alignment of your cam and crank. There should be subtle marks on the cogs and the rear cover or casting. The compression will be good during a cranking test, but will not be ok during a running compression check. Replace the timing belt and check the pulleys. If your timing belt did not slip, the timing chain tensioner or guide shoes may be worn and will require replacement.
