Could timing cause overheating and white smoke in tailpipe

the question is --is the engine running and performing correctly
if the marks are off by one tooth then it was installed incorrectly but answer the first question--is it running good
if it is then the timing is correct or else the performance will be off
AS to the overheating and white smoke , have a compression test done as it could be a head gasket or cracked head

Burning smell and tons of smoke coming from tailpipes

White smoke from your tail pipes usually points to water making it into the cylinders. Possibly a bad head gasket or even a cracked block. Gray or black smoke usually points to oil as the culprit.

Blowing white smoke out of exhaust pipe

White smoke is usually a sign for a bad head gasket. How much white smoke is coming out? Also, are you losing coolant and can't find a drip under the engine?

Overheating still has coolant, white part blew out of the tailpipe, made a banging noise then starting smoking. Overheating with all fluid high. Told there was a front seal oil leak but not bad. Lost 2...

  • White smoke out out the tail pipe means you might have just blown your head gasket. White smoke is water (antifreeze) burning with the oil.

White smoke from tailpipe, running poorly.

Blown head gasket for sure if its a petrol engine.

If its diesel then its overfuelling.

Why is my 1999 mitsubishi galant V4 overheating??

Both white smoke coming from the tailpipe and the engine temperature overheating are signs the cylinder head gasket is blown. You should have a block test performed to verify.

Exhaust tailpipe black on the inside is normal, check if you get white smoke from exhaust when engine is hot that means head gasket problem. If car fail going up an hill it is often a compression problem.
If car has automatic transmission, it can be also tranny not shifting down gear, this usually is a module problem, but you told me you checked this already.
Also a faulty throttle position sensor can give transmission problems, but when this is faulty you get troubles with gears on all situations.
