Do what the other Expert said and turn off all of the interior controls like Climate Control, lights, radio, etc. Then try to connect the cable.

You could have a defective relay, but make sure it is correct relay. Some relays work opposite, there are grounding Relays and isolated Relays.

Your starter could be bad.

you must RUN the scanner/computer for easy diagnostic, and fix it.
Remember the electronic vehicle is very complicated, You can have some faulty: PCM+ignition coil+BCM+sensor+etc.

For ranger new starter wont stop running


Starter Relay The starter motor solenoid relay switch (11450) consists of a pull-in coil, a contact disc, and two terminal contacts. Battery voltage is always present at the relay positive terminal. When the ignition switch (11572) is in the START position, the pull-in coil is activated and pulls the contact disc into contact with both terminal contacts. This allows battery current to pass through the starter motor solenoid relay switch to the starter solenoid (11390). The starter solenoid is deactivated when the ignition switch is in the RUN or OFF position.
Maybe something is hooked up wrong ! Or the starter relay is bad

Hooked battery up wrong on 1992 explorer, stereo smoked and now the windshield wipers won't shut off. No blown fuses just popped the line circuit from starter relay to alternator. Replaced battery...

Have power to headlights, but no power to the starter.


Check every thing with a test light just to make sure power is getting to all components.

1995 Taurus. Starter will not disengage. Engine cranks, but will not turn over.


Find the starter relay under the hood. It may be bad and stuck so power continues going to the starter. Try a new relay Or try pulling off the small signal wire on the relay (it is from the switch), and hook battery up. If starter continues to run, the relay is bad. If starter is stopped, put the signal wire back on relay. If starter now starts operating, and key is still off, then switch may be bad .Location of relay may be at left front fender apron, in front of shock tower (like on earlier taurus models).

STARTER WON'T STOP


If its a new starter check and see that the wires are hooked up right, could be time for a new starter, or starter relay on the fender well, or the ignition switch is bad.

I have a93 f 150 when i hook the pos cable to the battery the starter spins but the battery pos sparks ty


tHE STARTER RELAY is shorted and is stuck in the crank mode. The battery cable sparks because of starter load Relay must be replaced ot at least checked for the two small wires being crossed. One of the small wires on the relay should have current only when key is in crank position.
Remove the two small wires and see if it still cranks when battery is hooked up. If so, replace relay. The + cable goes from battery to relay. Ned

CAR WILL NOT CRANK


I gave you more than you should need

a) Do you have crank no start? (see entire write up)
b)No crank no start?, ( battery, battery cables, ignition switch,,starter relay)
c)No dash lights, no crank? (battery, battery cables ignition switch)
If you have symptom A then the affected items are , ignition switch, battery, battery cables, starter, starter relay ,coil, coil pack, ignition module ,Distributor cap ,rotor, (if applicable) spark plugs and wires.
The best thing to do is to first make sure your timing belt didn't break. As long as the engine cranks you can do this. Give the battery a 3 min charge . Then have a helper crank the vehicle while you observe the rotation of all the pulley's and belts. They must rotate together. If the vehicle has a distributor remove the cap ground the coil wire and watch the rotor as the engine is cranked. it should spin. If this is a-ok your worse nightmare is over.
Now we have eliminated the timing belt as being a cause.

b) We now have to charged the battery again for three min and load test it( this is best done by a repair shop a load tester is expensive ).If the battery if more than 5yrs old you may want to replace it.
If battery does not pass load test replace it.
Whatever you decide the rest of the items can NOT be checked out without a fully charged battery.
Check ignition switch and starter relay for B+ going to them and leaving them. Check starter circuit. Make sure B+ is making it to starter ( use a digital voltmeter). If B+ (12 volts) is making it to the starter and it doesn't crank then the starter is defective. Remove the starter and have it bench tested to verify.
a) If starter cranks now your into coil testing .
Pull a spark plug hook it up to a spark tester and ground it, now crank the engine if you get spark coil is ok and in all likelihood so is module.
If you don't get spark test for spark at the coil wire.
If you get spark here and don't get it at the spark plug wire problem is at distributor cap , rotor or spark plug wire. If plugs look bad use a fresh plug to do testing and naturally replace them.
If all of the above are a-ok.
Next is fuel checks.
Easiest fuel check is to put key into ignition cylinder and turn to on position. Lister for pump to buzz or hum. if it doesn't then check fuel pump relay for B+ going to it and leaving it and going to the pump. If B+ making it to pump and it doesn't turn on the pump is your problem. If B+ not making it to pump either the relay or the ignition switch is defective.
Naturally if the pump is defective have a repair shop do the repair . Its dangerous and a real pain.

If starter cranks now your into coil testing .

IF WITH THE TESTING PROCEDURES I'VE GIVEN YOUYOU CAN NOT DETERMINE WHETHER THE PUMP IS DEFECTIVE HAVE A REPAIR SHOP DO FURTHER TESTING ON THE PUMP. THESE TESTS ARE A LITTLE DANGEROUS and a real pain.

Wont start, new battery, relay good, starter good.


Check the Starter Solenoid mounted near the battery.Check it out in the dark...have someone try to start it and see if it sparks at the solenoid.connections may be loose.Also check/wiggle wiring harness to starter.
