Hi most alternaters have free bolts, you have one that is to adjust and the other two to hold it firmly in place, one bekt and one electical plug,
so loosen the free bolts take belt off take electrical plug off the back of the alternater(sometimes there is a single wire as well) then take all bolts out remove alternater, put together in reverse,
put bolts in belt on and adjust so belt dose not slip, then do electric.
job done.hope this was some help.

Fiat alternator change

You sound like your from my neck of the woods ,london? well cannot say i have done one as yet?? but you seem to have removed far too much gear for this job ,the alternator is at the back of the engine ,using some long 3/8th extensions to remove the bolts then if alternator is stuck you remove the top engine mount and jack engine up or lower it down to get the alternator out .Boy you seem to be making hard work of this job which i would expect to take about a hour tops including tea break

My 91 ford ranger doesnt want to stay started, all lights are dim. I think its the alternator. the battery only had 8 volts as well

It sounds like the alternator is draining the battery. I would remove the alternator and have it tested at a local parts store. I would also charge the battery and have it tested too.

How to change an alternator?

I don't know if you have the job done since your posting. It's a very easy job. I did replace mine few days ago. Let's say 30 minutes job with right tools and an inside work area. 1- disconnect battery terminals 2-remove the air filter assembly giving more room to work. 3- disconnect the wire connection to the back of the alternator 4- using a wrench key (14 or 15 milimiter dont remember) release the tension on the strap swinging the bender wheel (located at your left) to the right. Maintaining the binding wheel at this position get the strap out of the alternator pulley. Try to keep the strap in place on all the other pulleys and rollers to save you reinstall work. 5- Unscrew and remove the 3 bolts retaining the alternator (14 or 15 milimeters ?) remove and replace the alternator. Maybe you will have to use a prybar to get it out of its seat. 6- Do the reverse step by step to complete the job. Just make sure that the strap is sitting properly over the pulleys and rollers. Once complete, start the engine and check if everything is in line in regard to the strap. If the alternator was really the root cause of your problem now the meter in your dash should indicate between 13.5 and 14 volts with all the demand turned on ( front beam, defrost, heater fan, wiper). Within these bondaries you're in business. Good luck Sorry for my poor english language. Dan

Alternater died this am i am mechanically inclined can i change it my self and how big a job is it

If you have some basic tools it should not be to big a job. Go to your auto parts store, some will test the Alternator in the car and most of the people there are willing to offer advice as well. Call first to find out if they offer FREE Testing for alternators, etc.

2003 Grand Caravan alternator replacement

If they haven't moved it from the last place I remember seeing it (back on the passenger side near the firewall), It's not a fun job and definitely requires some skill and patience to r&r. But, not impossible. Haynes or chiltons have fairly decent instructions and only cost about $20.

Alternator problems

To change the alternator you do not have to romove or loosten the engin mounts. It is a tedious job but it can be done by loostening and removeing the bolts that hold the alternator on. There is also an adjuster on the alt. to tighten the belt up when it is replaced. You should have this done by a technician so you have a warranty with the job. I hope this helps. don,t forget to rate my answer

Changing the alternator belt

DAWN, AS I UNDERSTAND IT, YOU WANT TO DO THIS YOURSELF? GREAT! CAN DO! OK, FIRST YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE AND SEE WHERE THIS BELT GOES AND IF THERE ARE ANY BELTS AFTER IT,OR THAT IS ,IN FRONT OF THIS BELT. THESE WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED BEFORE THE NEW BELT CAN GO ON. TO GET THE NEW ALTERNATOR BELT ON YOU WILL NEED TO LOOSEN THE ALTERNATOR. YOU WILL SEE AN ADJUSTMENT ARM THAT WILL NEED TO BE LOOSENED, THEN THE RETAINING BOLTS ON THE ALTERNATOR. YOU DON'T HAVE TO REMOVE THEM, JUST LOOSEN THEM SO THE ALT. WILL MOVE. ANY OTHER BELTS THAT HAVE TO BE MOVED , JUST DO THE SAME. DAWN, MOST IMPORTANT, THE INTERNET HAS REPAIR MANUALS ONLINE THAT YOU CAN SEE THIS PROCEEDURE AND DODGE WITH HAVE SHOP MANUALS ALSO YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO VIEW ONLINE AFTER ENTERING THE JOB LISTING NEEDING TO BE DONE. ALSO, AND THIS IS A BIG ONE, THE PUBLIC LIBRARY HAS SHOP MANUALS THAT YOU WILL FIND YOUR CAR AND THE BELT CHANGING JOB. YOU CAN THEN PHOTOCOPY THE PAGES YOU NEED TO DO THE JOB! GO FOR IT GIRL! YOU CAN DO IT! IF YOU DON'T HAVE ALL THE TOOLS! NO SWEAT! MOST PARTS STORES RENT TOOLS FOR THE JOB, SO YOU'RE COVERED THERE! JUST REMEMBER THAT ONCE THE BELT IS ON, YOU HAVE TO REVERSE THE ORDER AND RETIGHTEN EVERYTHING AND MAKE SURE NOTHING IS LOOSE! WHEN YOU PRESS DOWN ON THE NEW BELT IT SHOULDN'T DEFLECT MORE THAN 1/2 INCH! OK? TAKE YOUR TIME AND YOU CAN DO IT! IT WOULD HELP TO HAVE ANOTHER GIRL THERE TO HAND YOU STUFF AND FIND PARTS THAT DROP UNDER THE CAR ETC. YOU #2 IS CALLED " THE GOPHER " GO FER THIS AND GO FER THAT " JUST KIDDING, BUT IT'S A LOT LESS SCARY WITH TWO. ALSO, IF YOU LOOK FOR REPAIR MANUALS LOOK FOR " CHILTONS " OR " HAYNES " THOSE ARE THE BEST AND ARE ACTUALLY WRITTEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD, WHICH ALWAYS HELPS! IF YOU NEED MORE HELP,REPLY TO ARCLIGHT1217. I CHECK MY EMAIL 5-6 TIMES A DAY. GOOD LUCK!

Replace alternator

Disconnect the battery, neg. post first. Remove the serp. belt., remove the alternator mounting bolts and wiring. Remove the alternator bracket, then remove the alternator. It'll almost feel like you have to be a contortionist on parts of this job. Hope this helps.
