Greetings & salutations Becky Buerkle,

In my very (less than) humble opinion... always get THREE estimates... no mater who you're talking to...

There are only a couple of things that might make sense... Your car is old enough to have aged/used your exhaust system... where there might be some loose AND rusty parts flopping around in there...

In my BUNCHES of decades on your planet... I have been burned twice by this (quite odd) anomaly...

1. Catalytic Converter,
2. Rotten Muffler.

If the exhaust can't get out ... the AIR/FUEL can't get in = simple:
You get stranded (there are baffles inside which can react to inertial changes (stranded)).

But BEFORE wandering into the vast vacuum of idle speculation... it would be seriously productive to BEG, Borrow or Buy an DIAGNOSTIC reader... (see Autel: below).

Many parts houses & muffler shops offer these OBD (on board diagnostics) services for FREE... In the hope they can scare you into dropping big BUCKS on EMERGENCY parts... not realizing these ISSUES have been plaguing you for months...

More likely: Water on the bottom of the fuel tank... It is heavier than gas and will move to the front (in mass) and get picked up by the fuel intake.

Some water can be GRADUALLY (any OCTANE booster, cleaner Techron, alcohol based fuel additive like Gunk... or even STP) absorbed by using fuel additives... but WATER can cause issues... The best advise would be to get the gas checked (possibly) drained & separated from the water...

Hey... alcohol works... You resisted so far... add a couple more "injector cleaners" until your car behaves SMOOTHLY.

Alcohol really does ABSORB water.

Hi there,
Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

Here's a link to this great service

Good luck!

I have a 2006 mercedes benz cls500.Car was running fine.I drove to visit friend. After visit I went to start car and it was a rough, shakey start.Within seconds a putt..putt noise and then car died.

How many miles on the car? How was it running before this happened?

Since the car started, it sounds like your battery, starter and alternator are probably fine. From the sounds of the way it died and not knowing anything about the car, I'm guessing either your fuel injectors or the air intake into the engine itself are not working properly.Could also be bad spark plugs if those have never been replaced. I think something is preventing your engine from combusting the fuel/air mixture in the cylinders to keep the motor running. It could be any number of things that are causing it and they will vary in cost... sadly, I don't think you're going to be able to completely avoid a mechanic bill, but hopefully it will be an easy fix.

1991 maxima crank, putts for 6 seconds, touch accelerator it dies

1st thing to do is try cleaning the inside of the MAF sensor and having the ECT sensor tested, that controls cold enrichment, it does the same thing as a choke, sounds like you have a lean run issue. You might also consider getting the fuel injectors professionally cleaned, it can make a real difference.
