These are totally unrelated, electrically. One very remote chance would be corrosion inside the PCM. But they are in different sectors, so it is very remote. Nothing from the radio wires gets close to the transmission wires. I would look under the dash at the steering column and the shifter arm for wires that are close to it and the ignition wires(column shifter). Console shifter, I just don't see where it comes into play. this would be wire chasing...You might check ground wires. Battery to the engine, battery to the body and engine to the body. These are the main 3 wires.

Hi George:
It's always interesting when problems and causes seem to be unrelated. In your case, it is electrical, and the first thing electrical for reverse that I can think of is the back up lights. Check the wiring, or dis-connect the backup light wires from the switch and see what happens.
Hope this helps.

I'd be looking @ reverse light wires too.

Hi Again George: After reading Randy's comments I'd like to make a suggestion Could you try to identify exactly when the problem happens? Is it the instant that you move the shift lever? Somehow, an action is causing the problem. The tighter you can get to that action, the closer you are to the problem. Identifying the problem is one of the fun parts of Fixya. Let us know what it was when you get it. That way we all benefit. Thanks,Ted.

instant when putting shift in reverse

Excellent! Can you identify which fuse includes the back up lights and pull that fuse, then see what happens when you do your test.

Maybe a bad Neutral Safety Switch.
  • Neutral safety switch sends a signal to the on-board computer to allow the engine to start and to engage the transmission
  • When not replaced, vehicle may experience no start and/or transmission will not shift out of park. Here's a link to what it look's like.

Had rebuilt transmisson put in now put shifter in reverse instantly turns the radio volumn off the radio digital info stays on. any connection to the new transmission. didnt happen before repair

check around the bell housing for a wire that is pinched during the re-fittment. There really is no connection between the problem and the replaced transmission so you will have to consider anything electrical not in the correct position

Reverse lights stopped working on 2005 jeep grand cherokee. bulbs and fuses good. Dealership and aftermarket do not offer a neutral safety/reverse light switch. Any suggestions greatly appreciated

totally untrue but using the wrong name
ask counter man for PRNDL switch, on side of transmission A./T
and tell him which of 2 transmissions used, there,
42RE?
the only line pages at jeep cover this.(parts online) why not look?

the shifter uses a cable , this cable goes under car
this other end goes to the manual lever on side of the trans
this lever has a PRNDL switch on every a/t made (most cars)
but?
when in R, mode, the switch closes and the 12vdc leaves there
to the 2 rear backup lights, and they glow.
sure check fuses, first , for ever and ever. that.
ive posted the GC FSM links now like 100 times. so will skip that

but what trans?
45RFE box.
on some jeeps the switch (sadly) was moved to the solenoid module.
'
called soleniod packaage

http://www.factorychryslerparts.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=640503&ukey_product=8664680

but you need to learn what transmission is there.
42RE
45RFE
or just what first, or you will buy the wrong parts.

does this help. surely the dealer will answer you.
even look up VIN in their database and see
what trans is there, no grease on knuckels at all.
the trans does have a plate on the side that reads.
BLA BLA.. full id and serial.

I have a 2005 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.7L Hemi. It will not engage drive but it shifts into it. When I put it into neutral it's like it's in reverse and when I put it in reverse it goes in reverse....

I would throw it on a scanner. Find out what's wrong. But with no scanner, the first thing I would do is check or replace the transmission range sensor/neutral safety switch. But, you most likely have a transmission swap or rebuild. Everything is electronics now days. You could have a bad solenoid, bad or shorted wire/s or a bad transmission.

Starts only in neutral

Usually a sign the neutral safety switch is not working correctly. On this model it could be part of the transmission selector switch.
The safety switch prevents someone from cranking the engine in drive or reverse.

Why wont the car start unless the car is put into reverse?

It sounds like your neutral safety switch on the transmission is bad or needs adjusted.

Problems starting problem is intermitent helps to move shifter out of park and put it back

It's sounds like the neutral safety switch is bad. When you turn the key to start the power goes from the ignition switch, to the neutral safety switch then, to the starter solenoid. When you say starting problem I'm assuming it won't even crank over. The car should also start in the "Neutral" position, there is an adjustment on that switch to, it may just be out of adjustment. If it cranks over but won't start then I don't see how the neutral safety could be the problem. The neutral safety switch is right on top of the transmission directly under the master cylinder for the brakes. You should be able to see where the shift cable connects to the transmission.
