2002 VW 1.9tdi engine lacks power and emits black exhaust smoke. What is likely cause?

If it isn't a dirty, blocked air filter, the EGR is always a firm suspect (Exhaust Gas Recycler). The EGR recycles a limited amount of exhaust gases and can become quite gummed up with soot and oil.

The Saab 2.2 tid suffers from this big style. Cleaning - takes about 30-45 minutes - usually solves the problem.

I wouldn't imagine that cleaning your VW EGR will take long or be too difficult. Have a look on the following link:

My Toyota Innova Diesel emits too much smoke. I've cleaned the EGR valve repeatedly but the problem comes back again after only a few days.

first make sure your air filter is clean. and make sure your oil level is correct.
lack of enough air will cause a lot of smoke and poor fuel economy
lack of air would show as gray to black smoke.
oil burning would be light gray to white

Occasional heavy smoke on tickover, but not using oil and oil clean.

HI do you now the color of the smoke
if engine emits white smoke its not burning the fuel
it could be water mixing with fuel = head gasket even tho you
dot have water in the oil
if engine emits black smoke - that's excessive fuel to air ration
check air filter & air inlet to see if clogged

if engine emits blue smoke - excessive oil consumption
cloud be valve seals

Lack of power, exhaust smoke and engine miss firing, EGR Valve has been removed and cleaned, new EGR Valve was fitted, made no difference, old EGR Valve refitted, car runs with no exhaust smoke and no miss...

Just an idea but the Ford Mondeo ( european car ) from which I believe your engine
is taken has a habit of splitting a low pressure tube at the back
of the engine this is a relatively
cheap, easy fix. The other symptom this used to throw up was a
little more black smoke from the exhaust and a pacing/ surging from
the engine.

I have black smoke blowing out the exhaust wen i step on the gas

I own a 2004 F-350 with the 6.0 Turbo Deisel...My wife has been driving it periodicll arround town and had mentioned from time to time it seemed to not want to get going. Well yesterday I went and picked the boat up and on my way home the truck lost all power and was spewing black smoke. After reading a few blogs I decided to pull the EGR Valve.. It sits right on top of the engine (from the front bumper looking at the engine) just forward and to the left of the oil filter. Two 8mm bolts and it comes off ( rotate back and forth while pulling up). The EGR valve was covered in soot and partialy in the open matter how far I manually opened the valve it stayed in that position.. After checking the price of a new EGR ., I decided a little home remedy was in need.. I let the valve portion of the EGR ( the lower porting, NOT THE ACTUATING PORTION) soak in fuel over nite. Cleaned the soot off and lubricated the valve shaft. Actuated the valve manualy an few times and it began to spring closed beautifully..A tad more touch up cleaning..reinstalled the valve and was able to hear a feel a noticeble difference in the way the turbo spooled up... no black smoke .. and running smoother... Quick fix..easy fix.. so easy I plan to make this part of my oil change ritual... pull the valve .. clean and lube... HOPE THIS HELPS ! !

Car hard to start. Car will emit

You could need a tune up. Remove a few of the spark plugs and look to see if they are black with carbon (black hard and flaky residue) or black with oil. When you check it, make sure its sat for at least half the day, but a full day would be best. If its covered in oil then you have bad valve guides and could require major engine work, or just some valve seals to stop the leak. The bucking and backfires could be caused by a faulty TPS or ignition module. Its a start.
