What causes the speedometer to jump on my toyota tacoma pickup?

It seems to only do this when going over 50 mph. At the same time that this is happening, it will often turn off the cruise control.

Possible vehicle speed sensor failure. Should set a code if problamatic and not necessarily turn on check engine light. Have codes scanned to verify a VSS problem. Also could be a buffer problem in the speedo head causing the malfunction. The cruise control will turn off if a speed signal is missing

Testimonial: "Thanks for the info! I need some help! Forty five years or so ago I was mechanic and an electronics technician, but that does me little good with the current technology! A prime example is this problem! I don't have a clue as to how to attack this problem. Of course in 'my day' we had speedometer cables, no more! This is a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 4X4. There are a couple of small electrical devices on the passenger side of the transmission that I assume are for the speedometer. It would be helpful if I could get my hands on a schematic that (hopefuly) would tell me needed info as to what each one does! I'm almost certain that it is a matter of a bad connection somewhere because sometimes the problem disappears and the cruise control works properly. There is no twitching of the speedometer when that happens. I have double check all battery and ground connections under the hood to no avail. Occasionally the red battery light will flash off and on if that's a clue. We have two of these pickups and both of them have the check engine light on and have for years. Any further info will be greatly appreciated!"

Loud whistling noise when travelling at higher speeds (ie above 50mph)

I had a problem with a whistling car after 50 mph and it turned out to be the front window gasket. I put silicone on the trim and problem solved.
