Question about Ford Escort
Car must be in park fully for the key to be removed. considering the problem with going into drive. I would suspect the shift cable or its attachments or bushings

If this is a manual transmission the clutch has burned out, it may need to be replaced, if you do not do your own mechanic work I would suggest that you take it to a good local repair shop and have them check it out. If this is an automatic I would still suggest the same, but the actual problem could be more complex. Hope this helps, let me know.

no chance then as it has to be in acc position to change just the barrel ,its a complete new steering lock iam afraid ,be carefull with the transponder and dont forget to change the chip in the key over as well ,you may be able to yank it out with a slide hammer though but its may damage the housing ,best is to renew the whole steering lock assembly but its a difficult to remove the old one as the heads shear off the bolts when fitted but sometimes a centre punch will slacken the bolts ,you will have to remove the whole steering wheel assembly though to change the assembly
