Damage to catalytic converters usually happens by striking something under the car or coolant water getting into the exhaust side... the white smoke sometimes seen from some cars. If you suspect your may be bad, use a light weight ball peen hammer and tap... not hit or strike the catalytic converter and listen for rattling inside. There are platinum covered, ceramic wafer plates inside that may break off over time, further reducing back pressure causing running problems. (Like trying to run with someone squeezing your throat, where you can hardly breathe.) If your State has emissions testing, the simplest thing to check are your Carbon Monoxide emissions from your test. A proper functioning CAT should have at or near ZERO CO emissions. This is what the catalytic converter was intended to address when installed to vehicular exhaust systems.

You have a V6 engine, bank one is the row of cylinders on the passenger (right) side, bank two is the row of cylinders on the drivers side (left). Your codes indicate an inefficiency in the cat on the left side but this could be due to a bad O2 sensor or an engine that is out of tune and overloading the cat. This car seems too new to have a bad cat. I would change the plugs and the O2 sensor after the cat before going any further. The reason I say the O2 after the cat, it's the one that is critical in sensing cat efficiency. What is the mileage?

Hi:
You need to find out what is causing the check engine light before you go any further. Your truck is OBD1, so you can't hook up a newer scanner, but you can jumper a couple plugs and the truck will flash the check engine light to tell you what the code is. BUt easier is to have one of your local auto parts stores check it for you for free. Most will do that for you. You probably have a bad sensor of some sort. It seems that some fail more often than others, such as the coolant temp sensor. These directly effect your engine timing and can cause poor fuel mileage, but have the code scanned and you should have a better idea where to look!

I guess indirectly it could. A bad oxygen sensor can allow unburned fuel into exhaust, damage the catalytic converter, and this damage could cause a "clog".

What emissions component has a problem with codes P0456 and P0442 on a 2004 Mazda RX8?


P0456 Is for the EVAP System. Small leak detected, check the seal on your gas cap.

P0422 Is for the Catalytic Convertor efficiency is below threshold. Meaning it isn't doing its job, you may have a bad downstream O2 sensor but more than likely you have a bad Catalytic Convertor.

I have 4 oxygen sensors 1 is bad code po431 bank 2 is the upper or lower sensor

My 2003 1500hd Silverado 6.0L has the error code of P0420. Can you help?


P0420 is a catalytic convertor efficiency below threshold, basically the convertor is not working to specs. As long as you are under 80,000 miles the convertor is covered under federal warranty for 8years/80K miles at the dealer. If its not covered, you need Bank 1 Catalytic convertor replaced possibly with Oxygen sensors.

I have a 2002 kia optima that won't pass Ca smog due to high nox. Also alternator problem, would replacing alternator help and where can I find assistance with replacing it. V6engine


Replacing the alternator is not going to help with your emissions at all. If your NOx readings are too high, there is a good chance that your catalytic convertor has gone bad. My suggestion would be to take it to an exhaust shop for the catalytic convertor (they should also be able to let you know if it is bad). As far as your alternator replacement, you can take it to any repair shop (possibly the same one who does the exhaust work) and they should be able to assist you with replacing it. Hope this helps.
