The tailgate handle is attached to two rods with each one controlling a separate lock. If you raise the handle you may find a spot where you can see the rods in behind the fulcrum point of the handle. If you can see the rod that is not working properly you may be able to move it with a screwdriver enough for it to release the affected lock. Some trucks have removable access panels on the tailgates inside so you can open it when this problem occurs. Worst case scenerio is to break the handle assembly and get to the rods.

There is no panel on the inside to access but there are three bolts holding the handle on the outside. I took it off and it hung down a couple of inches. I pulled on both rods and the gate finally opened.

Make sure the handle does not have a broken arm where the rod goes in and make sure the handle rocks freely and is nor seized. Hpe this helps

How to replace fuel filter on 1990 ford ranger

Locate the filter under the drivers door area. You will need the Ford quick disconnect removal tool(small round spring release button type tool) These hose removal tools are available at a parts store, You can get the "set" for around $20.00. A must have for the do it your selfer. When you have the tool insert the nose of the tool into the coupler on the end of the tube. (there may be a plastic retainer clip to remove first on the tank side of the filter, and a metal clip on the engine side.) When the tool is in place press toward the hose which you are removing and the coupler should dis-engage from the line. You may have to pull hard, and twist it a bit. The tool releases the push to connect mechanism inside to allow the hose to be removed.

Can't get tailgate to open/unlock.

I had the same problem. It could be that its locked or that the mechanism inside is jammed. There is a access panel on the other side of the tailgate. to remove it you need torx screw driver (looks like an allen wrench tip). reomve all the screws and the panel. the rods that keep the tailgate closed are connected to a plastic piece. sometimes the rod slips out, just wedge it back in and the door should open and close normally.

Rearwindow/ door

if there are no broken wires inside the tailgate try lubing the latches with WD40 and open and close the tailgate several times. If the latches are properly closed on both sides the window will not work

How to remove a tailgate

from a '02 Ranger...should be same...
rate me FIXYA!
  • disconnect tailgate stop cables
  • open tailgate normally...but stop when you are nearly halfway down (45 degree angle to ground).
  • now, pull tailgate away from bottom pivot (hinge) pin on either the left or right side of tailgate. This should allow both hinge pins to be free from the rest of truck.
