In the world of boating, it means to take the mooring rope off the dock so you can leave.
In the world of knitting, it means something quite different.

Hi Again Cherrie: My wife reminded me that "cast off" is also a term associated with knitting, as in something you have to do to finish it. That got me thinking, and it's also a term used to describe the action of untying the mooring lines for a ship, Bonus!!! Lots of great meanings. Hope this helps.
