If it dies right away, verify that your security system is not kicking (not being able to read the key code).

A 2002 jeep cheroke will start but wont stay running at idle speed

Two things I would check is how dirty the throttle body is and the egr valve. When the truck is idling the throttle body is barely cracked open and a ton of dirt on the butterfly can block some air from getting in causing it not to idle. just google cleaning throttle body. I would also check with the dealer and see if your jeep has an egr valve, Im sure it needs to be replaced and would cause the Jeep not to idle correctly.

Cooling fan does not kick on, and temp. of vehicle rises quickly. would it be a sensor problem, relay? fan ran continuosly , until fuse was removed and replaced. Now it won't run at all

Jeep has a very common problem with fan relay going bad. Sounds like it was stuck on at first, causing it to stay on all the time. Now its bad, wont energize fan. It is located between grill & bumper.

Common issue would be a crankshaft position sensor, but there are other possibilities

Jeep wants to stall when let gas off

I would remove the I.A.C. motor on side of throttle body & clean it good with throttle body cleaner (spray) and spray inside port it was removed from. Clean electrical contacts with contact cleaner.
