Question about Cars & Trucks

Has anyone experienced this before?

My car has cut out several times. It will restart but I did not think a diesel automatic could stall?? Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Engine Stalls

taken from:
http://flashoffroad.com/Diesel/troubleshoot/troubleshoot.htm
Here is an easy way to zero in on a stalling problem.
If it feels like someone reached over and turned off the key and it fires back up right away it's the injection pump.
If the same thing happens but it has to cool down before restarting it's the PMD / FSD(pump mounted driver).
If it stumbles and than stalls then it is air in the fuel lines. If it is this one try switching fuel tanks and just turn the key to run but don't start the engine. Listen to the fuel pump for a change of noise pitch. The pump is really loud when the pump is out of fuel and will have a muffled sound when pulling fuel. Sometimes the baffle in the main tank will brake away from the tank and the pump will suck air when the tank is just off full.
Also check for vacuum lock. If the fuel tank vent is plugged air can't get into the tank to replace the fuel that's drawn out. Remove your fuel cap and see if the truck runs.

so what cuts, name it>
engine or trans, is trans automatic or stick
cuts have vast implicaitons.
  1. bogs? full time.
  2. just misfires?
  3. hesitates a bit and recovers?
  4. engine stalls. but restarts or not?
  5. or the transmission slips,
  6. lost 12vdc power to the EFI fuel and spark system , see lamps go dead, just before CUT?

2000 7.3 stalls going 70 mph or anytime have to turn key to off position before it will restart

You can get a free wiring diagram and fusebox layouts at Autozone.com. Just register your truck on their site.

If you look at the wiring diagrams you should see that the starter lockouts and shift interlock is a separate process. Neutral is a position which allows the starter to work.

What you are having problems with is the RUN circuit on the ignition side. You could have a bad ignition switch. The switch should have an Ignition Relay in the Powerbox. If this is the Diesel, they have a KILL circuit to stop the engine that is different than a gas engine since the Diesel fires by compression.

So looking at your wiring diagram, you would be looking for a connector or component which could cut out intermittently. I am thinking more of a Relay because you have to reengerize the circuit by turning the ignition switch to OFF, before going to CRANK, and then RUN. Most of the time, the starter interlock only controls the start circuit.

Another possibility is the Antitheft. If the KEYreader loses communication with the Security system, it may stall. I know that vehicles will not start without the correct key or if an unprogrammed Blank is inserted.

I hope my solution helps.

First start of the day, engine fires up and runs well then stalls

This is a tough one to solve without hearing it myself. There are several things which will make noise, its the stalling that matters. I will give you 4 that can stall a car and make noise.
1.Traction control cutting off airflow to engine.
2.Automatic ride control pump pulling down alternator.
3.A/C pump locking up.
4.Bad Alternator
5.Bad fan clutch or water pump

You should go to Autozone or Oreillys for a free scan of your cars computer.

My 206 1.9 diesel wont start

a diesel engine can only cutout when overheating, loss of diesel fuel and air leak in the fuel system. if you know how to bleed or ask somebody to bleed right after it stall, then start the car, if it starts immediately then it is sucking air.

1995 tahoe desiel stalls when driving

I used to live on a farm where we had a number of Chevy diesel's in the 90-98 year range. The 6.2 and 6.5L diesel's in those trucks were known to have problems. A very common problem was with the fuel injection pump going bad, causing the engine to intermittently stall for apparently no reason during driving.
