a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Why does the 4x4 get stuck between high and low?

do say what tires are rolling on, we cant guess that. ever.
1988, is a part time 4wd drive with hub locks.
the transfer case is for part time 4wd only

that means, on ICE or dirt
never dry pavement.

see how 4wd works back then, (35 years long)
part time.

if you attempt to use it wrong, the lever will jam.
this is called WIND (or bind) UP.
stop doing that, is cure.

1988 Toyota land cruiser won't go into 4wd

so this is part time 4WD and as such only works
on ICE or dirt.
not pavement free of ICE
(its not AWD) its part time.
post location, (so i can read your weather report, dig?)
or post out door temps and conditions above. failure., (im blind)

if you drive in 4wd (PT) on pavement (no ice) it will wind up.
if you keep doing that, you may destroy the transfer case is the
drive line winds up.

see diffs here

your car has no center differential.
do not drive car in 4wd until you understand how top use part time
4wd, or $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
or get hurt. or others./?

98 Nissan frontier,4wd wont engage, lock in hubs manualy but they will not engage

If you have turned the lock tabs until they click in or out which ever the case may be for 4wd drive then maybe the transfer case is not selecting 4wd If it is vacuum actuated or electronic operation I would be checking their actions be for e I went any further.

I'm looking for some diagrams for a 1988 jeep

You might be able to find diagrams in the automotive reference section of your local library although a better source would be the actual maintenance manual for 1988

How do i make my pajero 1988 model 4 wheel from 2 wheel

You would need to change the Front Axle from a Beam to a 4WD Axle, then you would need to get a Transfer Case and ensure your GEARING is Identical. You are talking about spending more that what your Mitsubishi is worth and many many hours..

If you want a 4WD, then I would buy one and save yourself the Head Ache

Will not select 4wd but 4wd lights come on

You may have a 4WD case problem long in the making. Check to see first of all if the linkage is still connected well, and if the hubs lock in. Then, may be time to check out the transfer case.

Transmission fluid leaking back, 1988 Ford Bronco

your output seal on the tranny or input seal on your transfer case is bad. you have to pull your transfer case to tell. this is a pretty straight forward job. block wheels. put transfer case in neutral. drop front and rear drive lines.diconnect transfer case shift linkage. there is a short commponent connecting the trans to the transfer case. the bolt on either end face each other. remove the bolts to the transmission. the transfer case is heavier than it looks, i suggest getting help. pull back on the transfer case until it will drop down. it will pull out a bit because of the trans output shaft. replace what will probibly turn out to be the tranny output shaft seal and reassemble in reverse order.
