Question about Pontiac G6

1 Answer

My pontiac g6 front wheel locked up,I've put new calipers/brakes, new bearings and checked the cv joint. nothing has worked any ideas of whats wrong?

I was driving down a road started to slow down for a turn when I let off the brakes the car kept slowing as if I never let off the brakes, came to a stop and the wheel hasn't rolled since. I've changed everything that I could think of that could cause that. I'm baffled

Problem can be in the transaxle (transmission)

Have you checked your trans fluid level? If it is too low, the internals could have seized.

Testimonial: "it has fluid, and this is the only symptom, I haven't had any slipping rough sounds or nothing"

I had a front wheel bearing fail. I want to repair the vehicle and make it reliable. It has approximately 180,000 miles on it.

Sounds like you have it all.Plus have the front end aligned after you install everything. Also check air pressure in tires.

Bad sway bar

Could be CV Shaft or Hub Bearing as well. Jack up the front of the car, support with Jack Stands and check for play in wheels/hubs/bearings/linkage by grabbing wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock positions for tie rod ends and steering linkage, then 12 and 6 o'clock positions for bearings. You should barely be able to feel play. If you think it is more than acceptable climb under the car while someone else performs the tasks above. Turn wheels for excessive brake noise or out of tolerance discs. Out of tolerance discs will cause premature brake wear and cause pads to move around in the caliper sometimes before starting to grind. Finally, and what I think you're hearing/feeling is the CV Shaft. Grab shaft, move around feeling for excessive play in joint or splines on each end. Turn steering all the way lock to lock and turn wheels at each lock, forward and backward, feel/listen for clicking/popping. Most of the time you can quickly easily diagnose bad CV Joints in a parking lot by slowly, safely driving in a circle forwards and backwards making the joint noise more pronounced. If it is a CV Joint, my advice would be to spend the extra few bucks and replace the whole shaft while you're there. Its quicker and easier requiring less specialty tools to complete the job.

Not a wheel bearing - probably not a CV joint. Could be something inside the transaxle. Is it possible something came loose in the caliper-rotor area ?

Have you checked the rear brakes? They can cause shaking just like the front can.

CV joint and/or bearings obvious first guess. You say they are good or did you actually replace already? Check entire front wheel assembly-lug nuts tight?brake caliper/rotor positioned correctly and tight?suspension tight and in good condition?any signs of rubbing indicating abnormal part travel?

Why does my ford escort give a grinding noise from the front left wheel on braking, with or without the brakes applied?

Your brake squealers are rubbing, telling you it is time to change the pads before they wear down the rotors. If that isn't the sound you got then the bearing is shot and you have less time to fix it because it will weld itself to the spindle and you will have to replace more parts. Hope this helps.

you have to replace bearing and hub as a unit.you have to remove remove brakes and caliper rotor set them aside dont disconnect brake line. get a piece of clothes rack wire to hold brake caliper .do not let it hang by brake hose. you got to remove hub nut. best way to do that is loosen it a litttle while tire still on weight of car keep wheel from turning .
