Typical vapor lock issue on a carburated model 302. Make sure the fuel line isn't resting on the engine where it could get too hot.

Not starting like the starter is dragging or not turning. Replace the starter. Need more specifics to help you. How it's not starting? Year make and model also helps.

what codes are present? If it is lean codes P0171/P0174 problem is most likely the orings leaking between upper and lower intake manifold if this is a 4.0L

sounds like the idle control vale is sticking when it is cold. It is located on the throttlebody right at the air inlet

Change the coolant sensor located close to the thermostat housing. This is easy but do not over tighten it. You will have the same problem if you do. Tighten till it does not leak only.Good luck!

Try adjusting the choke on the carb, cold engine ajust flap 1/4" open, also make sure choke pull off is ok and holds vacum.

Many idling problems such as yours can be resolved by simply having the car tuned up ie , new air filter, change all spark plugs, oil change, etc... you'd be surprised by the outcome! Good luck.

Where does the choke on my 1984 ford 302 motor go connected to?


usually to the S terminal on the alternator. white wire, half battery voltage. starts warming choke after engine starts when alternator starts to put out voltage.

Could be many things, Check the EGR valve and make sure its not stuck open, Oil pressure low is probably due to rough idle or low RPM. Also may have restricted cat converter.

My 1984 Ford F-150 V8 302 choke is not working?


Your choke should have a spring at the bottom under a little cover with a rod coming up and connecting to the butterfly for the choke. Usually this get a little corroded and sticks, you need to clean the pieces so that they rotate freely and the rod will move up and down. It is adjusted on some models by bending the rod to make it longer or shorter. When you push down the gas pedal for the first time in the morning it should set the choke, test this by opening the throttle while its cold out, once the throttle is opened the choke should close, once the engine is running there is a vacuum operated linkage that should pull it back some, until the engine is warm. Again if this worked before, its probably dirty so a good cleaning is in order. Hope this helps, let me know

I got a 1988 ford f-150 4x4 302 engine it idles good but when your driving it hesitate and stalls.


I had this problem also and it turned out to be related to the cold start system. cant remember the part name but it was causing the hesitation problem.

I'm not too familiar with an 86 302. Does it have essentially the throttle body unit to meter the gas? (looks like a computer controlled 2 bbl carb) or does it have some some funky intake system?

At any rate, check the tightness of the bolts where the throttle body unit attaches to the intake manifold. You may have to replace the gasket (if any) that resides betwixt these two pieces as well. Sound like a vacuum leak, so check the boss on the "back" of the motor where many vacuum lines are connected and make sure they are all firmly on their nipple and check the condition of the vacuum lines themselves to make sure they are not cracked or split.
